Formatting update
So there’s been lots of good feedback from commenters and writers on the new formatting. Basically what I’m trying to achieve is something that looks very much like the old format, but with more modern functionality that the old theme we used. Some ideas include using a three-column format for the home page, and two-columns for individual posts. There is certainly some inefficient use of white space and other problems that need to be worked out. Some people really don’t like the top black menu bar. What I really want to do is make the comments section and post section more legible and functional. So it may be that I can work my way through the code on the old theme and get it working the way I’d like – or it may be that this new one can be revamped in a way more pleasing to the eye. We’ll see. Keep the comments, complaints, ideas, etc. coming. Thanks.
I don’t know how others feel, but I would prefer if blockquotes were not italicized. We make liberal use of the blockquote around here, and they are difficult on the eyes that way.
Also, in the “leave a reply” window, my gravatar overlaps the words “Leave a Reply.” This might be easily fixed by just removing those words. Or by placing some white space immediately before them.Report
You could also consider italicizing blockquotes, but putting them in a sans-serif font. Italicized text is much easier to read that way.Report
One other suggestion: Could you have a list of the Twitter accounts of those TLOOG contributors on Twitter listed somewhere?Report
Yeah, whitespace seemed to be less of an issue with the two column design and already the nested comments are cramped. Likewise, the lack of top/bottom padding around the logo makes my hair stand on edge at how close the shadow on the hat comes to the divider below it (that’s a normal reaction, right?). Also “Gifts of Gab” is really not going to resonate well with your younger audience – although please don’t go too far in the opposite direction with something like “What Up?!”. Is there a way to have the time-stamp (X minutes ago) on those comments to show their timeliness? And remove either the commenter name or the gravitar to save space?
You can tell I’m procrastinating on a paper deadline when I get really petty…Report
Count me in with those who don’t like the big, black bar at the top. And one thing that I would like to see, although I have no idea how easy or difficult it may be to put in place, is some sort of subtle line at least on the left hand side of the main column (the middle one in the 3-column iteration). It makes it much easier (at least for me) to keep track of what level of nesting I’m on with the comments once they’ve moved below the other columns. It’s a small thing, but it makes the conversation easier to follow.Report
