Mississippi Governor Signs Bill Increasing School Choice for Special Needs Students – Opportunity Lives
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill Thursday that will increase educational choice for parents and students in his state. The Equal Opportunity for Students with Special Needs Act, passed by the state legislature earlier this year, provides scholarship vouchers for parents with special needs children so that they can attend a school that best suits their needs.
Is $6500/year adequate for the average special needs child? I’m asking this honestly because I have no idea.
In general, I’m skeptical of voucher programs since they seldom pick up the entire cost of tuition and really end up subsidizing high to high-middle income families. It all depends on the details.Report
Depends. What the hell are we expecting, anyway?
Daycare?
Actual improvement?
Work? (one can start children working at around age 3 or so…).
I doubt there’s much call for restraints to prevent the special needs kids from punching through walls — until they hit puberty, at least.Report
One theory: Compliance with No Child Left Behind is easier if kids with learning disabilities can be offloaded into private schools. (Speculative)Report
