Heavenly!
In 1717, George 1 of England and his buddies went out on the Thames to hear music written especially for the occasion by his court composer, George Frederick Handel. It lasts for about an hour, and it’s all wonderful, but this is my very favorite part. It’s difficult to know this, because I grew up with it, but I think that on hearing it for the first time the natural response would be “Let me guess … 18th-Century England?”
For decades now I have tried to envision the real-world contemporary situation that I might find myself in when this would be exactly the right music to have playing in the background.Report
