I’ve read something similar before. People think that they are already doing some good and feel that they can afford to be a bit more of a jerk because on balance, they will still be people that can look at themselves in the mirror.Report
While people who beat their wives, abuse their kids, and torture puppies have gotten all of their aggression out, and are a pleasure to be around.Report
Different baseline: perhaps the people who beat their wives, etc, are just nasty people in general. Immediately after they finish beating their wives, they’re more pleasant than they usually are.
Long-term effects: this study (and other studies I’ve seen) only shows the effects of immediate priming. It’s possible that long-term involvement in prosocial/antisocial behavior has a different effect on long-term behavior patterns than one time priming has on behavior immediately following.Report
Ah. That would explain the religious right, then.Report
It also happenned to be a David Brooks column I thikReport
I don’t have a subscription to Sage. I can say this about altruism, people who are hungry are significantly less altruistic than those who have been fed.
In a well-run refugee camp, two feeding lines are set up: one for the women and children, the other for the men. If you try it any other way, the stronger men will immediately grab the food meant for the women and children.Report
