Leaguefest 2012: Rooms Going Fast
If you are planning on coming to Leaguefest 2012 on Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-May 28), please make your reservations soon. Our group rate will not be valid after April 25, only a few days from today. At $79 a night, the rate can’t be beat for a holiday weekend. And you’ll have the chance to meet and mingle with many front-pagers, prominent commenters, and several of the Ordinary spouses. (I should say that they’re Extraordinary Spouses, not in the least for putting up with us in all our bloggy geekery.)
For $79 per night you get a deluxe room at the LVH Hotel (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton). To get this rate, even at this late date, call (800) 635-7711 and advise that you are registering for “The League of Ordinary Gentlemen.” Our group reservations code is SGGCM2. But seriously, call soon, because the rate expires on April 25.
I’ve left instructions that the LVH is going to need to stock up on gin beforehand. They don’t seem to believe me — let’s prove them wrong. On behalf of all the Ordinary Gentlemen and Gentlewomen who write here, I hope you’ll take advantage of the offer and we’ll all get to meet in Las Vegas in just over a month. See you there — look for the guy who is somewhat more overweight than his gravatar, sporting a fashionable bowler hat!
I’m rooming with Will.Report
I’ll be coming from Orange County, California.
I’ll be driving a rented car. Does anyone want to come with me?Report
Not with those teeth in the car!Report
You can save yourself the rental fee and just pay for half my gas. I have a van.
Anyone else coming from SoCal? I can seat 6 comfortably.Report
Anyone flying in on Friday that wants to share a cab or car, let us know.
Also, for those that are Vegas regulars, any suggestions for daytime activities, in or out of the city?Report
any suggestions for daytime activities, in or out of the city?
Hold your shot in your right hand, and your beer in your left.Report
And I’m assuming “shot” is in no way a euphemism here, right?Report
Eh, so long as you have eaten something, do whatever. What happens, etc.Report
Come on people! Make this happen! Come to Las Vegas!Report
I was on hiatus when this was being planned, and since one of the things I hate most in the world are people who don’t pitch in and then complain about the result, I won’t do that. But, simply as an explanation, on Memorial Day weekend the kids are all home and the family’s together. Not a time I can get away, even for something as fun as this sounds.Report
I would love to be there. However i have a bike trip to Europe in a couple days and we are going back east for two weeks in june so it didn’t seem wise to spend more money. That’s the best excuse i got. I do like Vegas though even though i don’t really gamble. I hope it goes well and there is another one. You live stream an event so we can watch.Report
I really wish I could make it. Anyone in the northeast interested in a “Leaguefest East” for sometime toward the end of summer?Report
If there is any leaguefest east, it should be really conducted in the east. (Hint Hint)Report
And New Zealand is even further East than Singapore. In fact (if you’re using the dateline as the cut-off) we’re about as far East as you can get.
Just sayin’Report
A trip to new zealand wouldnt be that bad. The air fare would be far cheaper at least. (Also do you live in South Island or North?)Report
North, Wellington to be exact.Report
Due to some recent unexpected events, I’m now pessimistic about my ability to get to Vegas. A Leaguefest Northeast at the end of the summer would thus become a must-do for me, and I would be happy to help planning on that front.Report
This is most disappointing and I hope circumstances change back.Report
Dude, you’re one of the (granted, many) reasons we’re going!Report
Nooooooooooo! I understand, though, you gotta do what you gotta do.Report
+1, both on the understanding and the “Nooooooooooooo!”Report
MT- in for NE hard.Report
Ottawa’s pretty far north. Maybe y’all should come up here.Report
Ottowa, that’s only a 10 hour drive for me.Report
Michigan isn’t exactly the NE, but I would be interested, depending how far NE we’re talking about (not that I wouldn’t love to go to Maine or Vermont).
Vegas just isn’t in the budget this particular year.Report
I’m also on board for an East- or Northeast-version. The wedding and the cost of a plane ticket from DC to Vegas on Memorial Day weekend have made this one a tall order for me.
Additionally, James, since I’m in Michigan roughly 3-4 times a year, I’m not opposed to meeting up there either.Report
What activities are planned? I am mostly concerned about how much more they will cost. Will non(alcoholic)drinkers be tolerated? (I am willing to be a designated driver, if necessary.) This is so vastly outside my comfort zone I am actually contemplating it.Report
Planned activities are a meetup one night and dinner the next. No one will force you to drink although I suspect there may be some good-humored peer pressure. Leaguefest East for Memorial Day this year means the Palace Station or Hoover Dam.
But an eastern U.S. venue for a future date is certainly a good idea. NYC or DC or NOLA all would be good. For now, let’s get as many Leaguesters as we can out to LV NV next month.Report
There would be at least one person that would not give any hard time at all for doing the nonalcoholic thing. And I bet I’m not the only one.
So don’t let that be a deterrent.Report
Tod is not the only one. I can’t promise I will be alert enough to kick people in the metaphorical shins for giving you a (non-affectionate) hard time, but I will certainly be on board with you not drinking. Heck, having been the least-drunk person for multiple Vegas shenanigans, and having therefore had to do stuff like figure out how to get 3 people on the right bus and home safely while seeing double, I would be outright *grateful* to know at least one person in the room was sober. 😀 – though I certainly wouldn’t expect you to shepherd us. It would just be nice to know.Report
1) That is one kick-ass gravatar.
2) While I personally am planning to see how the bartender’s martinis stack against mine, and think I might have agreed to drink boilermakers at some point, I promise that I will give nobody a hard time if they don’t drink.Report
Was the gravatar comment for me? I snagged it from a public domain copy of a 1912 tapestry by Marianne Stokes (who worked with William Morris), Ehret die Fraeun (Honor the women) (cf. http://idlespeculations-terryprest.blogspot.com/2008/05/ehret-die-frauen.html ). Um, which you maybe knew already 🙂Report
Goddamn it, I was pained enough missing seeing Jaybird but now I’m missing you too? The agony, it burns! The goggles do nothing!Report
I feel your pain, North.Report
Aw, I will miss you two too.Report
This is so vastly outside my comfort zone I am actually contemplating it.
RIGHTEOUS!Report
We are bringing ingredients for this non-alcoholic cocktail if you’re interested.Report
For the record, I’m… like… broke. Well, as broke as you can be and still be able to consider Vegas. I think my total budget for the entire trip is under $300, not counting gas.
So one nice dinner, and a night of drinks, and probably I’ll be spending the rest of the trip sitting by the pool.Report
This is exactly our plan as well.Report
Wait… You’re going to Vegas and NOT gambling? Might as well go to, I dunno, Fresno or something…Report
Oh, I’ll gamble for a small stretch.
But it will have to be a small stretch, unless I get very lucky.Report
I would love to come, but by memorial day weekend I will be in full crisis mode for the gaming convention that I’m running. I’m in for next year. (And in the mean time, gaming-interested leaguers should come over to San Luis Obispo and visit my thing in late June).Report
Holy cow, how did this not get mentioned before?Report
‘Cause I’m mostly a lurker. Jaybird asked me to write a guest post about it at one point, but I was very much in the middle of busy things do do and kinda forgot. Might have some time in the next few weeks to write a thing if you’re still interested.Report
I am also interested!Report
Burt, we shoudl probably tlak at soem point about gettin set up for soem kind of Skype-in. I’d love to be able to drop in, even if only in a virtual sense.Report
Ditto.Report
Two problems need to be addressed: first, I think it’s unlikely that there will be a quiet place like a conference room available for skyping. This is intended to be a symposium in the classic sense — a social event — rather than the modern academic sense. Second, my laptop is on its last legs and I actually wasn’t even planning on bringing it. Someone can bring a better device, but it’s going to have to be someone other than me, and we’ll have to figure out where and when it can be done. Perhaps we can set aside some time in somoene’s room.
These are problems that could probably be overcome. Please feel free to send me an email: My screen name with no spaces, [at] gmail.Report
I have a laptop, an HD projector, and a partridge in a pear tree. I can bring that stuff easily (again, van).Report
Pat, would you plan on bringing those? Maybe we can set up a conference or something, or if someone has splurged on a big room we can have a mini-conference there. I will not have much time over the next few days to work with my contact people at the LVH, unfortunately; however, I don’t think there will be a lot of demand for their conference rooms on Memorial Day weekend so maybe we can get something worked out.Report
The partridge and pear tree either stay in your van or our room’s deposit is your responsibility, Pat.
(I can bring stuff too, if needed. Pat’s stuff is probably better than mine, but I have laptops coming out of the wazoo. No projectors or birds, though, and my dog would probably be miserable.)
Report
I’ll leave the partridge home.
The tech stuff I got.Report
It just occurred to me that I think the LVH has some ridiculous rate for Internet service.
Skype might be contraindicated due to bandwidth.Report
IIRC, it’s $12 a day. When I did my recon trip, I was too cheap to pay for it so I cannot attest as to the quality of bandwidth or strength of connection. A hardwire ethernet connection may be a better way to go. Will research in my copious spare time.Report
Heh.
If we room close enough, I can put up a wireless access point on the wired network port.Report
Patrick Cahalan, you rebel, you! How’d you get so streetwise and footloose, playing by your own rules like that?Report
I forge my body in the fire of my will.Report
We’ve made reservations and I will be doing my best to improve my alcohol tolerance in the coming weeks. Look forward to meeting everybody.Report
Awesome. Will it just be you and Ms. ED, or are you bringing the whole brood?Report
Burt, you should get in touch with Jason in case there’s anything you need done ahead of time. We will be in Vegas for the week in advance of the symposium, so if something desperate comes up last minute that needs personal attention we can do it. You should have our mobile numbers, and we should probably have yours.Report
Check your e-mail.Report
Saturday afternoon I need to go here. Lots of us should go.Report
