On “Of Course I Want Trump to Fail

I worry about not only what the Trump administration will bring, but what will come next. I would hate to see Trump's campaign become the new template that most hopefuls follow. I want the American electorate in general, and Republican primary voters specifically, to think "you know, that wasn't such a great idea, let's not try that again".

I don't know that a mediocre administration will accomplish that. Then again, I don't know that a horrible one will, either. I have a pretty poor track record lately of trying to guess what voters will care about.

Gabriel Conroy: the fact that Mr. Trump is making no such commission

Neither Trump nor his team have said there will be not be a commission. Just that a final (public) decision hasn't been made. I'd argue that the headline of the article Mike linked was click-baity in the opposite direction. There could still very well be a commission and Trump may have very well already told RFK that he would head it.

- I've long thought the displayed prices in stores and restaurants should be the actual price you pay, including any and all applicable taxes, fees, surcharges, sales, etc.

- When I think "Netflix shows", I think shows made by Netflix, not shows available (for the moment) on Netflix.

The first backup camera I used was a much better implementation than the car I have now. The screen was on the left side of the rear-view mirror, instead of the center dash, so your head and eyes were up, the rest of the rear-view was still in your vision, and it was easy to glance to your side mirrors as well as turn your head around. It blended in with the normal process of backing up.

Having to tilt your head down to look at the screen doesn't augment the process, it changes it. I would not be surprised to find that different implementations produced different results.

I get that, I'm just very pessimistic about how effective it would actually be. Many (most?) people aren't open to conversations with canvassers to begin with. And then there's the Drudges, Limbaughs, and O'Reillys of the world constantly stoking the notion that white America and its values are under attack. Not to mention the results of the study may not hold up for other forms of bigotry.

Yet, I still would like to see more work done in that area.

Practical realities aside, I think the idea that the people holding the majority of political power in this country need to be coddled and kept away from hard truths is going to be a tough sell.

I picked up Orwell from the Steam sale. It had good reviews and an interesting premise. You belong to a big brothery type organization investigating terrorist activity. You investigate suspects by looking for relevant information on public web pages as well as in their private communications. It wasn't too long, but interesting and engaging as things unfolded. I'll probably play it again to see how much the choices the player makes actually influence events.

I initially thought it was a different game I saw the trailer for some time ago, but that's not out yet.

Clinton really should have done a better job of heeding Obama's words:

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

It was just on the radio a few days ago that, on average in the US, Hindus have more schooling than Jews.

Beyond the body sovereignty issues, how would you handle rape?

It's quite possible that any criminal proceedings would last most or all of the length of the pregnancy, so we're really talking about the accusation of rape.

If, in your scenario, an accused rapist loses the ability to stop an abortion, then you could be incentivizing false accusations.

If not, then you could be permitting a rapist to legally compel his victim to carry his child to term.

Police, that is, not registries.

Obviously Clinton's problem here is that she tried to reach out to the tragically unheard middle America instead of standing fast on liberal principles.

My guess is he forgoes a desk and installs a dais and one of his gold chairs

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "fake news ecosystem". If you mean only specific site that try to fool the reader into thinking they're a legitimate news site, then I don't know when those really became an issue.

But, anecdotally, I have witnessed a ton of BS shared on Facebook by friends and family. It's usually some newsy looking blog post (think Kevin Drum) which as a link to a blog post which has a link to a blog post which has a link to a blog post with a link to the actual news item. Often, the information has been completely distorted (intentionally or not) from the original article, like some twisted internet game of telephone.

I did, in years past, make attempts to show that some of these were clearly, provably false, but it had no impact. It was typically dismissed with something along the lines of "that doesn't matter, because I know X is horrible anyway".

On “Linky Friday #193: Creatures in Crime

People like Ted Cruz? Any respect I had gained for him for calling Trump out and refusing to endorse him was washed away by the pathetic image of him phone banking for Trump.

Even #NeverTrumps like Romney are lining up to kiss the ring. (And whatever happened to the principled Mormon holdout in Utah?)

I don't expect much conservative opposition to the Trump administration unless public opinion turns hard. And even then, it's questionable.

On “On Reversing the Tide

This all (the entire post-election climate, not this post specifically) feels like some generic romcom dialog:

"You never listen to me!"

"I'm listening now. What do you want to tell me?"

"...That's not the point!"

"

We could call it microtapping.
