On “Get used to this headline: Tebow Wins!

If there's anyone who can make Tebow useful on the football field, it's Belichick. But he's third on the depth chart and I can't fathom New England carrying three quarterbacks when one of them is Tom Brady.

On “Sunday!

Bah!

...in trench warfare again, was it not?

"

One of the purposes of "Blitzkrieg" was to specifically avoid getting bogged down

"

_Crossroads of Twilight_.

And technical manuals related to my new job.

On “Naming Rights

BlaisP, this reminds me of mail call in basic training. My instructor was epically bad at pronouncing names; so bad, in fact, that I suspect he did it on purpose. And when an Airman would try to correct him, he'd just growl back at them, "It's whatever I say it is!"

Good times.

On “Saturday!

My last go-round with FTL, I decided to play with crew teleportation instead of focusing on trying to beat the game (because I'm apparently incompetent and can't beat the fisher on easy). Turns out that teleportation is heaps of fun. I didn't even care that I was a complete failure.

The goal of my current XCOM game is to capture three specific achievements which have up to this point eluded me. I for sure got one and I think I've earned one other, but the last one has to do with capturing and interrogating a specific alien, a task I failed to accomplish due to an unfortunate incident with an Assault and the "Close Combat Specialist" ability...But that's ok! I view it as more incentive to start another game, especially since I need to replay anyway to take advantage of a particularly nice person who gifted me the "Slingshot" DLC! :-)

On “FNC: Where a Muslim is Just a Muslim

I had previously seen Resa Aslan interviewed on The Daily Show, and I watched this interview last night. Reza's reply to the tweet Green read toward the end of the interview had me laughing.

"

I see what you did there, Jay.

On “In The First Circle Bookclub!

I'm considering picking up the three volume Archipelago, and I'll probably add Denisovich to that list as well.

"

A fantastically strong finish.

With Oskolupov, it was more "Innocent? What does that even mean?" Remember also that there were four or five others who were picked up near the phone booth where Innokenty made his fateful phone call. I don't recall which official thought it, but it was something about how they would have to be charged with something because they couldn't just be released after being picked up (the state is never wrong, after all).

And now a silly question: How much of this was real? I mean, the book is based off Solzhenitsyn's own experiences in the penal system devised by The Honest Hard Working Man's Best Friend, but how much of it is an actual reflection of life in Stalin's Russia? How could a nation even function while yoked with such a system? (Or maybe this question is best left for next week's post...)

"Surely it doesn't happen here."

Well, no, it doesn't. And yet...if you write your dissertation and base your research on poorly supported or discredited sources, you're going to get booted but you most likely won't get thrown in prison. I listen to a podcast by an astronomer who's doctoral thesis turned out to be wrong, but that's ok because the point of her research was the result, not being right.

One of the themes throughout my reading which has stuck with me was the treatment of returning Soviet prisoners of war:

"A truly loyal Soviet soldier would have fought to the death, never allowing themselves to be captured, so by returning from a German POW camp, you've clearly demonstrated that you are a traitor to the Motherland. That's ten years plus another five years' suspension of rights."

The amusing and yet tragic farce of the "trial" of Prince Igor explains this contradiction perfectly.

"

I just, as in right now, finished 48. But I'm a bit of a slow reader, so don't pace the book club on me!

I grew up about twenty miles from Timken (spent a night there once with a friend) and my parents live near Pilsen. Wow.

Good stuff,

On “In The First Circle Bookclub!

That settles it, then. I'm starting over when the black gets here (got shipping notification today).

"

Crickey, does this mean I'm going to have to reread the first fifteen (sixteen) when my black version gets here (yes, it probably does).

"

Hey, we're at +2 until everyone else notices them and votes them down!

"

1. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins (was going to go with Siamese Dream, but I felt like I had to stand up for Mellon Collie)

4. The Fat Of The Land - The Prodigy
5. Until Now - Swedish House Mafia
6. Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble

"Stupid Girl" brings back memories of being stationed in Australia, flying down an outback road in the dead of night in my Aussie friend's Ford Falcon with the windows down and that song at full volume. +1, indeed.

On “2-0 down? No problem.

I'm happy for the win, but I feel like it's band-aids like these which will keep Arsene Wenger in the manager's chair for another season despite their lack of hardware in eight years.

On “FYIGAQ, Better Of Ted edition

This was EXACTLY my thought...until Kazzy nixed it below.

On “Walking Dead Discussion Thread: S3 E11, “I Ain’t Judas”

He'll end up destroying himself through his obsession to destroy the prison group. I'm thinking something like getting trapped in the prison as it's being overrun by walkers through the as-yet unidentified breach or perhaps going down in flames with Woodbury. Sort of a "nobody gets Humperdink" ending, and yet we all know that he buys it in the end.

"

The answer to the question, "Where's Carl?" has become, "He's over there, kicking some ass."
