On “The Virtue of Tuning Out

I got an early start on tuning out/disconnecting. I got rid of twitter. I've stopped participating in political discussions online, and do my best to be quiet and non-participatory when people I'm with want to talk about politics. I'm finding better uses for my time. I simply no longer care, though I leave myself the option to come back later. Meantime, I hope everybody has the future they deserve.

On “Weekend Plans Post: Leonard Cohen

Heh. I was already unmotivated and this holiday configuration just made it worse. Couple that with catching a cold this past week and now I'm deep in the PTO hole with probably no shot at a non-holiday break until March and...is there a word for "negative motivation?"

On “Saturday Morning Gaming: Hades II First Impressions

This Means Warp is on sale so oldest boy and I bought copies and I gifted a copy to youngest boy so the three of us can play together. Think of it as a slightly-lampoonish multiplayer version of FTL. We tried our hand at it last night and had a lot of fun figuring out who should be doing what job on the ship and how to keep our own hull intact while destroying the enemy ship, but we keep getting blown up in pretty much the same spot, so we know we're missing something vital. Pretty fun, though. You can hire crew to help you in single-player mode but this game's strength is in getting four friends together to crew a ship.

On “Weekend Plans Post: Recovering from the Holidays

The season has been so delightfully hectic that I'm only just getting to this post today!

On Christmas Eve itself I wanted to try my hand at making meatballs (inspired by a handful of recently-watched episodes of Good Eats) so I talked youngest boy into braving the holiday grocery stores on my behalf and...well I made 24 meatballs and they all vanished. And that was meatballs all by themselves--no noodles or sauce or anything like that. Next time I make red sauce I'll do it with the meatballs instead and we'll see how it goes. Notable: youngest boy has an egg allergy so I substituted three tablespoons of avocado in place of the egg.

I also learned on Christmas Eve that I was making Christmas dinner, so since I had a newly-restocked freezer and recent experience over Thanksgiving I made a brisket. K made this delightful German warm potato salad and my Mother-in-Law showed up with an excellent bottle of wine, so everything worked out just fine.

My sister is coming to visit Dad and my brother today in Kansas (she should actually be there today) and she asked me if I'd come as well. Normally I'd hop at the chance but I decided instead that I wanted to stay home and enjoy having both boys under the same roof again for a little while. Sis understood.

Merry Christmas, Em.

Is it, like, metadata for the packages in the repo? Can you just recreate the repo metadata using "createrepo"?

I'm done at 1330 today and will be working from home Monday and Tuesday as my workplace will be closed. After today I won't have to see this place until 2 January. Woo! I even got to send one of those "I'm out after today until next year" emails this morning. More Woo!

On “Weekend Plans Post: Back Into the Swing of Things

War of the Rohirrim comes out today, so I'm hoping to get to see that this weekend. I got my new drum kit set up yesterday so I'll be spending some time tweaking placement and sound and loading drivers and all that sort of fun stuff (it's an electronic kit, a Roland TD-27KV2). And hoping to get some hands of Magic in there somewhere, too.

So long, Bashir! Don't let the door hit you in the Assad on the way out!

On “Weekend Plans Post: Recovery and Honeydews

I'm getting off a bit early today, so I plan to do a bit of Christmas shopping and maybe think about what to make for dinner and shop appropriately. Then it's home to maybe think about the space I need to clear for my new drum kit, which has been tragically sitting in boxes in the garage for going on three days now. I need to get my tiny bit of Christmas decorating done this weekend as well. I'm also about 100 pages away from finishing Joe Abercrombie's "Shattered Sea" series (not as good as his "First Law" series; not as good as some of his stand-alone novels, but still pretty good) so I should schedule some reading time in there, too. And, of course, gaming Saturday night.

Such a senseless crime...I don't understand why anyone would be upset enough with an insurance company CEO to be moved to commit murder. Sure is a mystery.

We're Rome, and we've always been Rome: A thin veneer of civilization and sophistication covering a deep, deep core of ignorance, fear, and anger. Our roads are pretty great, too. We do have the advantage over Rome in that our art and music are better.

On “Joe Biden Pardons Local Man

It's the funniest gods-damned thing I've read in these "nothing matters any more" times.

On “Weekend Plans Post: Thanksgiving in Iceland

We ended up leaving for Kansas in a hurry Tuesday night, and that turned out to have been the correct decision, as the roads in Colorado were a mess by 2AM. I did a brisket for our Thanksgiving dinner and it turned out excellent despite my severely underestimating the cooking time (it became a late dinner instead of an afternoon feast). This was on only the second brisket I'd ever done and I know conventional wisdom says not to experiment with Thanksgiving dinner but I got away with this one. It's been nice hanging out with my people here. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all.

I'm hoping that Gabbard obviously being a Russian agent provides the silver lining of firewall restrictions being relaxed on government machines so I have an easier time surfing the internet at work while her Russian/Chinese overlords are penetrating all of our networks, because I deserve a bone thrown my way from this shitshow, too, gods damn it. this_is_fine.gif

On “Saturday Morning Gaming: Castlevania (Remembered)

I think Castlevania was the first game I ever actually beat. I still have the music stuck in my head.

On “Weekend Plans Post: Garlic (Specifically Toom)

I have to work a full day today so this weekend is going to feel short. As such, I have no concrete plans for anything. Ugh.

Man, that's awful. I hope you get better quickly!

On “Weekend Plans Post: Batchin’ It (Again) and It’s Snowing

I've been snowed in at home since Tuesday, and I've chosen to burn through PTO rather than work from home because fish that (six day weekend!). I did manage to throw together a pretty sweet roast last night using just what I had in the freezer/kitchen/whatever so that was nice. The snow is supposed to stop today so we'll see if I can get out. I might even be able to make it to gaming tomorrow night!

On “Final Thoughts Before November Fifth

I know you're just having a go, but the guy was very careful to make it clear that his congregation should vote as they felt best. I don't believe that he made this declaration from the pulpit anyway.
