In my head I read the Alexis de Tocqueville quote in Kyle Reese's voice. And as you say, what we're calling "AI" is indeed correctly identified as nothing more than a glorified search engine. Great article, Andrew.
"I have encountered many people who claim to not like Trump but are among his most ardent defenders."
Oh boy. A good friend of mine from the old home town regularly insists that he's not in any way a Trump supporter, yet he consistently and reliably parrots the latest Trump apologia Fox News spoons out to it's viewers.
Yes, what North said. As a many-years IRL friend of Jaybird I, too, often find reason to criticize some of his rhetorical choices but jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, y'all! This post ain't one of them.
Based on my own experience, the real problem is 15-year-old Vance hanging out with the wrong 15-year-old girls. But yeah, I get it. Even as a nerdy D&D player I looked at Magic and thought, "No way...I ain't THAT nerdy!" But now here I am many years later with close to 20 decks and having just this week spent mumble mumble mumble dollars to upgrade my Shelob, Child of Ungoliant spider tribal (excuse me: KINDRED) deck.
I remain convinced that Trump's success as the Republican candidate wrecked third-party candidacies. Nothing I've seen in the past 8 years has changed my mind on that.
That's very similar to how I ended up a sys admin.
Air Force recruiter: Ok, what job do you want to do?
Me: Uhh...(points at guy next to me) what's he doing?
Recruiter: Computer Operator
Me: That sounds good.
Also: Even after 28-ish years of living here I am continually amazed at how much hotter it is down in the city as opposed to the temperature up here in the forest. I get caught overdressing in the Summer All The Time!
We bought this house in '98 and it didn't have AC. Our first-born came along in 2001 in July. My parents came to visit and my Dad (an HVAC tech) proclaimed that our house was too hot for a baby. A few weeks later he showed back up with a friend and a bunch of industrial gear and we've had AC ever since.
I'm reminded of a chili cookoff at a previous job hundreds of years ago. One of my coworkers had a reputation for making the spiciest chili, so of course, I had to try it. The first bite was delicious--an excellent chili, ineed! However, after that the spice took over and I couldn't taste anything anymore. So that's kind of where I fall on the "spicy food" spectrum: the spice should be a highlight or an aspect of food, not the main event. Obviously, if that's your thing then more power to you, but I'll be over here not having to power my way through a dish.
This weekend we're going up to Boulder to move youngest boy into his new digs for the upcoming school year, just in time for the arrival of the big heat wave: It's project to be in the triple digits in Boulder.
"Fish" it. I no longer care. I'll vote for whomever the Democrats nominate but otherwise I'm checking out. The ignorant seem more happy anyway. It was a good run.
I took the dogs for a walk this afternoon (it was cool-ish) and youngest boy and I finally replaced the broken-for-two-plus-years-and-just-propped-up mailbox post, complete with a new locking mailbox. As with all tasks, this one turned out to be slightly more difficult than expected, but nothing major (a 30 minute job became a 1 hour job). Imma call that "good enough" and take the rest of the day off as the Founders intended. Happy Fourth!
Not much planned for this weekend. Looks like it's going to be a bit cooler this weekend so I might leash up the dog and take her hiking again. We did six or so miles last weekend and she trotted the whole way (except for the bits where she found a shady spot and refused to budge for a few minutes--smart dog). Otherwise, not a whole lot going on.
I'm mostly playing Helldivers 2 with the boys. Youngest is back from college for the summer so he's connecting his gaming laptop to the big TV and we're all playing within shouting distance of each other. It's been mostly a blast scattered lightly with frustration when they want to play the higher difficulties and I'm...just...not...fast enough to keep up. But they very graciously carry me from objective to objective and I contribute as best I can.
Reading about Knights in Tight Spaces has got me messing around with Fights again and...I used to be good at this game!

Try this instead:
Other politicians and their policies might deserve the benefit of the doubt, but not Trump. So...yes.

The best thing about Twister (1996) was the soundtrack. The bar is so seriously low for what gets a sequel and what doesn't.

My Mom was a nurse, so basic training more reinforced my bed-making training than anything else. Top sheets always and forever.
