On “Walking Dead Discussion Thread: S3 E11, “I Ain’t Judas”

I wonder about the Tyreese character. He was, for a time, a big part of the comic, but in the show his niche is being filled admirably by Darryl. This frees the show writers up to take his character in any direction they choose. I was intrigued by his statement to the governor that he and his group would "do anything" to be allowed to stay in Woodbury.

My firearms experience is limited, but here's this: When I initially qualified with the M-16, one of the things I learned/was taught was that only firing 19 rounds out of a 20-round clip allowed me to simply eject a magazine and insert another without having to pull the charging handle, whereas emptying a magazine required that extra action. At least with the M-16, dumping your magazine a few rounds early allowed for faster reload times.

As a matter of fact, I'm reading this post right now on a Macbook running Ubuntu (dual booted w/ Snow Leopard). Runs like a dream, it does. I've noticed some wonky behavior with my touchpad as well, but at least gestures and reverse scrolling work.

I'd forgotten about this. I agree completely.

Goal of the year? Frankly, I thought each of the two runners-up were better:

I absolutely LOVE the entire zombie genre, although it gives me the most insane nightmares (which, strangely, I enjoy) and I find myself looking at the buildings I'm in and judging them on their defensive capabilities and potential for long-term habitation in the event of a zombie apocalypse. My brain is weird like that.

"

I was going to comment with this question as well. You really owe it to yourself to read the Zombie Survival Guide as well.

But...but...what about the children? Oh, wait, you covered that in the last paragraph. Well done.

Two thumbs up on XCOM as game of the year. I may gift it to the lads for Christmas, though part of me would love to see them play the original game first.

On “Ibra!

I once dug one out of the goal mouth. I mean, it was indoor soccer and it was NOTHING like Ibra's shot shown here, but my keeper had come out and the ball got behind him. I raced down and slid and knocked the ball clear. Unfortunately, this being indoor, sliding is a no-no for everyone except the keeper, so I got a yellow card and our opponents got awarded a PK for my (rather selfish) play. But the other team did congratulate me on an excellent play while I executed my walk of shame off the field, so there's that.

Fantastic goal! But Joe Hart's gotta know that if you're coming that far off your line to play that ball, you MUST put it out!

Voted this morning (ink blot) at the Catholic Church up in the Forest. I was right in and out after dropping the boys off at school. No personhood or marriage items on the agenda this time around, but the ubiquitous marijuana measure was there, along with the sheriff and the transit authority asking for more money ("no" to the sheriff, "yes" to the rta. A few years ago we said "no" to the new criminal justice building but the county "found" the money to build it anyway, so screw those guys). Sixteen candidates for president on the ballot!

On “Week Five Wrapup

I'm a Chiefs fan and my reaction to the cheering was similar to yours. Fans are so fickle. Was it Cassel's fault that the backup center screwed up the snap count on the goal line? That a rookie running back failed to properly secure a handoff? That two offensive pass interference calls wiped pushed the Chiefs out of field goal range and wiped out a touchdown? That Dwyane Bowe allowed a pass to hit him in the helmet and bounce into the arms of a Ravens DB? No, no, no, and no and no.

I wouldn't blame Cassel a bit if he managed to drag this concussion out for a few weeks. A few games with Brady Quinn at the helm and my fellow Arrowheads will be pining for Cassel under center again.

On “So, Hey, Columbus. That Was A Pretty Big Deal When You Think About It.

Huh. I was going to post that Ghengis may have had more of an impact on Europeans by his death than by his life, because his armies were at the gates of Vienna and were recalled when Ghengis died--or so I thought. Turns out that Ghengis died some ten years before Vienna and it was the death of his successor, Ogedei, who forced the recall and saved Vienna (and perhaps Europe).

The things you learn...I've had a book on the Mongols sitting on the shelf for years. Perhaps I should pick it up sometime, eh?

Actual, effective security is difficult and inconvenient. The number of arguments I've had with testers over security policy is...disheartening, and worse still when I have the same arguments with fellow admins.

If it's the children's book you've talked about before, you should totally write it.

Happy birthday, Jay.

"When I was a kid, grownups seemed so very Grown Up. I feel like a 20-year old who isn't very good at faking having gone around the sun so very many times."

I often think this, too. The benefit of time and distance has allowed me to look back at dad as he was when I was growing up and realize that the experience was the same for him, too.

On “Week Four Roundup

That depends. Was Tebow forced on Ryan by an owner or GM or does Ryan have some say in personnel moves?

"

Rex Ryan has been pretty firm that Mark Sanchez is his starting quarterback. Sanchez's problem is that he doesn't make good decisions with the ball and can't hit his wide receivers. Tebow has many of these same issues, but he does at least bring the running dimension into the game and he doesn't fumble when he's hit. However, Tebow takes a passing attack already on life support and switches off the respirator, making the Jets offense one-dimensional and far easier to stop.

Much of his success in Denver, also, was due in part to good wide receivers like Eric Decker and the tight-end-in-wide-receiver-clothing Demaryius Thomas. He doesn't have targets like that in New York, and it's even worse now that Santonio Holmes may be lost for the season. Dustin Keller is a very good tight end, but he won't be catching many passes from the bench (hamstring).

"

I think I used up my entire quotient of luck for the season in the final 3:30 of Monday Night Foosball.
