Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

Convoy is a great pop song: it’s original, catchy, topical, and you can listen to it over and over until you get tired of it — at least I did. Pop has always been 99% disposable fluff that’s vaguely embarrassing in retrospect. If, rather than having reached number one and largely disappeared, these were songs that people treasured and used to explain the world to themselves, then I’d be concerned.

Jaybird, what are you saying here? That even in a democracy, just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s good? It’s safe to assume that we all knew that already. For this you unleash upon us C.W. McCall, Los del Rio, and Jedward?

Now, go in the corner and think quietly about what you’ve done.

I’m sure we all remember the “best rock song of *AAAAALLLLLLLLLLL TIIIIIIIIIIIIME* arguments from various weekend nights in college where we sat around on the floor listening to albums and arguing about it.

Stairway always made a good showing, Gimme Shelter was the song that I always argued was the best song, but Under Pressure normally held its own in these discussions as well.

Watching Jedward sing the song, you’re stuck noticing how their understanding of the song seems to be Vanilla Ice’s understanding of the song… “isn’t that a great bassline?”

    Yes. It is.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it.Report

The right answer is, of course, “My Generation”, because that combination of anger, self-pity, and nihilism is what rock’n’roll is for.Report

      • Jaybird in reply to Mike Schilling says:

You know, if you said “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, I might say that it was a fine contender and, depending on the day of the week, could hold its own against Gimme Shelter.

My Generation is a trifle. Dessert.

And before I get myself in trouble I want to clarify: It’s worth eating!

It’s just that I’d put “The Kids Are Alright” ahead of it on the “Greatest Rock Song” ballot. (I’d put “My Wife” ahead of it.)Report
