Weekend Plans Post: Back Into the Swing of Things
We’re entering the time of year that the office is getting really silly. The building itself has only about 60% of the folks who normally show up in it. Some of them are “working from home”, I’m sure, but many of them have just started Christmas Break a little early. So the whole “Hey, in order to do this thing, we need to talk to Bob” conversations have started and you know where Bob is?
Elsewhere.
So if I have a list of things to do with 10 things on them, 2 or 3 of the things are pretty much off of the table due to this or that person being elsewhere. Another 1 or 2 are due to me being able to talk to the person I need to talk to but them freezing up because they need to talk to somebody and that person is out for them.
So I am back to the joys of working with engineers who are troubleshooting problems and are unencumbered by the guy who usually says stuff like “did you submit form 429-C before you touched the network cables on that machine?” and we are just able to figure out why the network bridge mode isn’t working. (As it turns out, the guy (not me!) who built the server screwed it up).
On top of that, the jet lag has waned from being something that wakes me up before 4AM into something that wakes me up around 5ish AM and… well, might as well get up, pee, log in, check my email, start up a couple of VMs, and figure out why that one container keeps restarting following a reboot.
We figured it out, for the record. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, we even have a fix.
So, all that to say, I think I’m back. I think I’m waking up somewhere around a reasonable time and I think I remember how to do my job.
Just in time for Christmas break.
This weekend will be spent catching up on lost time and doing stuff like “going to Costco and restocking water and Maribou’s preferred tea” and post-post-vacation laundry and our medical professional friend from Denver will be coming down to Colorado Springs to treat patients and then come over for some Caesar salad and pizza and Maribou’s friends are coming over for breakfast on Saturday and I have no doubt that there’s something I’ve overlooked.
But it’s good to be back. It’s good to remember how to do things.
So… what’s on your docket?

I feel like this week was my first relatively normal week since returning from eye surgery. The previous couple of weeks, I felt like a zombie by the end of the day. I think I might actually have the energy to make it to the board game meetup tomorrow. It will be nice to play after the last few months stuck at home.
We started decorating for Christmas last week, but we still have a mess in the living room of storage containers, so we need to get that finished up and stash things away. I need to see if my anti-rodent fix in the attic is holding. Other than that, I don’t plan to get to ambitious.Report
Excellent. Your previous descriptions make my two broken ribs last month seem pretty easy once I got past the first week.Report
Saturday is graduation.
Today I have three Zoom interviews of job candidates to replace someone who is retiring
at least I got the moving all the lab stuff done
Also today I am trying to total up final grades.
I hope to grab a LITTLE time to relax after graduation, this week has been a real stinker.Report
War of the Rohirrim comes out today, so I’m hoping to get to see that this weekend. I got my new drum kit set up yesterday so I’ll be spending some time tweaking placement and sound and loading drivers and all that sort of fun stuff (it’s an electronic kit, a Roland TD-27KV2). And hoping to get some hands of Magic in there somewhere, too.Report
We have a Gala charity event on Saturday… not exactly the Met Gala, more of a local school gym Gala. But a Gala nonetheless. Or so we’re told. Anyhow, one of those local events where all the adults in the community dress-up and catch-up on all the goings on since the last semi-annual time we got together.
We’re sitting with old friends one of whom is an actual professional Portrait artist and former F-14 fighter pilot; he has friends who like to chat about art, and others who like to chat about military history, but I’m on the short list who likes to talk about both. Someday when that Nigerian Prince calls me back, I have big ideas to commission a religious work about Mary from the perspective of Eve. We like to talk about how we’d stage that — and plan research trips to Sepphoris (birthplace) and elsewhere.
But, before the Gala, as is customary for Gaudete Sunday, we go to the tree farm to pick-up our ‘Advent Tree’ and then adorn it with lights and purple ribbon. The Sonos Evening Playlist is updated from the ‘Pop Holiday Winter Mix’ music to ‘Christmas Crooner mix’. Eggnog is licit and no longer sneaked. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.Report
We had a weekend planned. Whole thing just got blown up by flu (the traditional kind not the stomach kind) hitting the older son. He is bummed about a slew of stuff not happening but adapted well enough to a day of sleep and unrestricted tablet time.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t hit me, but the Sudafed is ready in case I need it to fight through the shopping home stretch.
Yes everyone got a flu shot, no, it doesn’t matter.
My wife suggested we stay up and watch Krampus tonight in case we’re dropping early the next few days. So a silver lining.Report
