Lex Luthor Is My President
It looks like Superman is going to renounce his US citizenship in Action Comics #900. (I wonder if Clark Kent will keep his…)
In any case, Superman is tired of having his actions seen as instruments of US Policy. Which is fair enough, I suppose. Personally, I am interested in seeing where the storyline goes or if Superman will just protest against the Mullahs alongside the Iranian Rebels today (as a mere sovereign individual) and then go back to fighting Darkseid tomorrow.
“The American Way” as something that is peculiarly “American,” or something that is universal? The Declaration of Independence though it may well be an “American” document, doesn’t present itself as such. Rather it presents itself as a universal document applicable to all places and all times.
If a superhero fights for unalienable rights to “liberty” and “equality” is s/he fighting for “Americanism” or something universal? I’d like to see comics explore that theme.Report
American Way is a supremely average in-flight magazine. I’d just as soon renounce it for whatever Delta or United has to offer.Report
How can Superman be an American citizen with no birth certificate?Report
I imagine that he would have been Naturalized at one point by Congressional Order.
It just means that he couldn’t run for President.Report
There was an Elseworlds where he became president. I’ll have to dig it up to see how they addressed the issue. They might not have. It’s my belief that writers need to take classes in US government to avoid things like a Senator saying that he aspires to be Speaker of the House (as was the case in Spawn).
Kal-El would have to be naturalized, though Clark Kent would almost certainly have a birth certificate erroniously saying that he was born in Small County, Kansas.Report
Armageddon 2001. Action Comics Annual #3.
I’m tempted to go dig it out of my boxes upstairs…Report
Thank goodness for the internet.

Pundits debate whether or not he can run for office at all with the requirement that the candidate for office be a natural born citizen of America under the US Constitution. In John Byrne’s revamp of Superman, he was inside the birthing matrix until he arrived in Kansas and was born in America when the Kents discovered him. Superman turns over the birthing matrix over to STAR Labs for verification of his story. Upon the conclusion of STAR Labs the US Supreme Court rules in favor of Superman’s candidacy by a 9-0 ruling.
So there it is.Report
And for that matter, why hasn’t the MSM asked to see Martha’s birth records or Clark? Are we to believe she was nine months pregnant in the high-profile job of farmer’s wife, and no on happened to notice she was with child?Report
They had several miscarriages early in their marriage, RTod.
There was a particularly bad winter and Clark was born to them at the end of it. They just didn’t tell anybody about the pregnancy because of the multiple disappointments they had gone through.Report
Get Superman a cute blue helmet, a pack of Gauloises and a comfy chair, and it can be truth and justice the UN way.Report
