When I lived in New Jersey and found myself in the Diamond District with a Jewish friend, he remarked that some of those older orthodox Jewish men were indeed carrying ten million dollars worth of diamonds, some were there to make it more difficult to recognize patterns in the trips made by the ones with the diamonds, and some of them were security playing dress-up.
My wife-to-be and I bought her engagement diamond in the District. After a lengthy discussion with the man waiting on us about color, quality, size, cut, and so on — he seemed pleased we’d done homework, but hey, engineers — he spread a black cloth out on the counter, went to one of the drawers along the wall behind him, pulled one envelope from among many out, then sort of casually spilled out fifty or sixty diamonds that met the conditions we’d established.Report
