Weekend Plans Post: The Unexpected Toothectomy
Momo’s mood had been worsening over the last few months. Quicker to squabble with the other kitties, quicker to hiss, quicker to go from “please rub my belly” to “Cuisinart”.
So we did the thing where we called the vet to come over and they determined that he had lower back pain and needed to go on an NSAID. Fair enough. His mood improved… a little. But he still communicated deep unhappiness. Huh, as it turns out, cats can get hypertension too… so he went on a blood pressure pill. Hey, who among us does not take a blood pressure pill? And he still communicated deep unhappiness and… well, this time, we noticed that he was dropping food when he was eating. So we asked them to give special attention to his teeth and, wouldn’t you know it, he had to have them removed.
So we give him to the vet and she removed his teeth. And that happened today.
He’s still in a bad mood, but it seems to be a much more cheerful bad mood. The doc says that he’ll be back to normal come Saturday night. Until then, same regimen for the pain management (and I specifically asked “even with the teeth?” because I remember when I had my wisdom teeth out, I was useless for a couple of days and couldn’t eat anything more interesting than baby food for a week) and he’s going to be needing his water changed out a couple of times a day instead of every couple of days but… yeah.
We should get our old Momo back. And, this time, if he goes from “please rub my belly” to “Cuisinart”, it’ll be much gummier.
As such, this weekend will be spent tending to the poor little gummy kitty and trying not to laugh as he masters his new drinking techniques that can no longer rely on his canines keeping his tongue on a bullseye straight down to the water. And brushing our teeth just a little bit longer than usual.
So… what’s on your docket?

All of them? In one go?Report
Well, it’s only all of the teeth on his right side. But that was less funny.Report
He’s going to look peculiar when he snarls…Report
A hissing cat gives a brief moment of insight into what was terrifying tens of thousands of years ago.
By making the cat neotenous, we already take something scary and defang it.
Further defanging seems unfair.Report
The whole flashlight?Report
I guess they don’t make dentures for cats? I know the cats my parents had periodically had to have a tooth or two removed, and one of them lost a fang, which gave her an….odd…expression. But they kept *most* of their teeth.
I know some people brush their cats’ teeth; none of the cats I’ve known seemed to tolerate that much.
My own wisdom-tooth removal was not so very bad (I guess I had an excellent oral surgeon) but yeah, nothing but broth and soft food for several days afterward. (Frankly though I had more pain with a crown prep than with the wisdom-tooth removal).
Plans for this weekend are minimal: run some errands today, go in to the lab tomorrow (I have to finish up the soil extraction on Saturday). But at least today I am taking a day more or less for me.Report
Aw poor kitty! I guess it’s canned food forever now.
We have two whole weekend in a row where we’re not going out of town and Mr T isn’t paying a gig and Fledermaus isn’t dancing in anything. Kiddo had a sleepover with a school friend. We’ll probably have some people over and grill some things if the weather is nice. There is so much cleaning up and unpacking and laundry to do.Report
Classes have started back, so I have homework to do.
There are two wrestling PPVs this weekend. Saturday night is an AEW event, which I am mainly interested in to see Cody and Dustin Rhodes tag against the Young Bucks. It’s free to watch in the US, but I would not advise watching the preshow. For some reason, AEW have decided to put crap on their preshows.
On Sunday is Extreme Rules. I have no idea what any of the matches are. I will probably put this on in the background while doing something else.
My lawn is overdue for mowing.
There are still boxes to unpack.
Should be a busy weekend, but there will be some enjoyable bits in there.Report
The rest of the family is going camping this weekend so I’ll suddenly find myself in an empty house this afternoon. They’re camping nearby so I may join them for some hiking tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise it looks like a hedonistic weekend full of video games, tv sports programs, super hero shows, and some board gaming Sunday eve. Also (no politics) I ventured onto the VA’s benefits site to see how difficult it’d be to change my direct deposit information and…damn. I now have a much better grasp of why so many veterans find it difficult to take advantage of the benefits they’ve earned. It’ll likely be easier to do what I need by mail or by talking to someone on the phone.Report

Eugh, fledermaus just texted me – kiddo is going to need one tooth extracted, one filled, and three crowned. They’re all baby teeth, fortunately. But gosh.Report
The worst kind of synchronicity.
That sucks.Report
Yipes. My niece had to go through extensive dental work at 4 – apparently some of her baby teeth malformed? They had really deep crevices and got bad cavities. They actually had to put her under in order to do all the work.
Everyone on my mom’s side of the family has miserable teeth; apparently it’s genetic. I have four crowns and one or two teeth that still have fillings (and probably will need crowns eventually. I broke a tooth rather spectacularly one Fourth of July weekend…
And I am very compulsive about dental hygiene. I just have bad teeth. I also tend to make tons of tartar which means a lot of time in the chair, ugh.Report
