Weekend!
I suppose it is in the nature of chores to be Sisyphean tasks… Anybody who has ever had a cat knows the experience of cleaning the catbox only to have the cat run up and immediately relieve itself the moment you put the scooper down.
My personal bête noire is the recycling. I take the recycling box out, dump it into the bin, and walk back and get everything just the way it should be and… oh, yeah. We have to go through the mail. The recycling box is no longer empty.
The perfect day doing laundry, whites, colors, light delicates, dark delicates, fuzzies, bedclothing, and everything put away… and, oh yeah. When it’s time to go to bed, throw whatever was worn that day in the freshly empty basket.
I suppose I could do the last load au naturale, but that would require it be July or August (and I’d need to get the other members of the household on board).
Groceries don’t feel like that. Those are more of a “the fridge is empty” turns into “the fridge has barely any room for more stuff!” and turning it slowly into an empty fridge again doesn’t feel like an uphill battle as much as the refrigerator fulfilling its destiny.
But, man. The recycling and laundry baskets? The sweet, precious hours where they’re emptied and then manage to stay that way for more than 59 minutes? Man, that’s the best part of doing chores.
Speaking of which, this weekend will probably be devoted to variations of all of the above. Plus gaming on Saturday night and, on top of that, Sunday is the first cheat day since Fat Tuesday! Wooo!!!
The best part is that my diet, so far, has been a somewhat rousing success. The doctor told me that my blood pressure was great. I’ve lost 20 pounds, and that my cholesterol is a bit higher than it was but that’s a decent enough price to pay given the 20 pounds. (After giving a short speech about the virtues of turkey bacon, of course. Pretty sure her heart wasn’t in it.)
And I’ve only had one slip-up! And it was a dumb one! It happened at Costco, of course, and I walked past a handful of stuff I couldn’t sample. Crackers with cheese, that cheesy popcorn/caramel popcorn combo, the pretzels stuffed with peanut butter… Ooh! Cheezy brats! I can have those! And I grabbed a cheezy brat and ate it and realized that I also ate the pretzel stick they used to spear it with.
It wasn’t a huge thing and I’m sure it didn’t take me out of ketosis but, dang. I was so good otherwise that it really irritated me.
But Sunday is going to have the huge brunch buffet (and I can have caffeine with it!) and then we go over to the sister’s and she said that I was going to be in charge of bringing the ice cream.
And on top of everything else, we begin festivities for Maribou’s birthday. Happy birthday, honey!
So… what’s on your docket?

Oh man, yes.
You know what else is a Sisyphean task? Grading. I get a batch done and then I get ANOTHER batch. It’s a good weekend when I can get my grading done before Friday evening.
I have a long weekend this weekend – amazingly (because I teach at a state school and because I didn’t think evangelical Protestant Christians – of our student body that identifies religiously, that’s the majority – did much for Good Friday). I do need to do “big” grocery shopping (hour’s round trip) but tomorrow I am baking a cake (so I can break my “fast from desserts” on Easter) and generally relaxing, because I worked really hard last week and the experiment I was running has concluded, and the next one has not started yet.Report
I have Aaron type projects going on – steam bending wood back to original shapes, scraping old varnish, aligning end bells on vintage motors, etc. Spring is starting so the wife is out and about gardening and hopefully emptying the greenhouse that the spare bedroom has become. So all that, along with hopefully getting caught up on some reading (ha!).Report
Congratulations on the health. Cholesterol is a great case study in confirmation bias. You could probably predict someone’s level to the single digit based on how dismissive they are of its importance. Compared to cholesterol, politics is a realm of open-minded inquiry.
The end of Lent. I’ve been working my way through the Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena. Challenging – it always takes me a while to get momentum when I’m doing spiritual reading. But it was a great choice. It’s generally the case that Dominicans focus on the intellect while Franciscans focus on the will (love of God and neighbor). Catherine was a Dominican – there’s nobody more intellectual than a 14th century peasant girl from Siena – but with her, there’s a focus on self-knowledge leading to greater love of God, and love of God leading to greater self-knowledge.
I made it a couple of pages past the midway point in the past 40-some days. I can’t decide if I’ll keep going at it a little at a time or if I should save it for next Lent.Report
Congratulations! Healthy is such a difficult goal to achieve for so many of us these days. You have made quite the achievement.
One of my friends is moving close to me, so I’m baking housewarming brownies tonight. My mom is fresh out of the hospital with a shoulder replacement so Junior and I are visiting her this weekend. I’d like to make my annual trip to the Tulip festival because the daffodil festival is too far away :(. There I will collect flowers to bring to my friend who is making probably the most difficult parenting decision of her life and moving her child with a disability out of their family home.
I’d like to make it through the weekend without gaining any weight. I’m 25/40 weeks pregnant and I just read a “fun fact” for the week that says my uterus is the size of a soccer ball. I don’t think I can get any bigger! I’ve taken up physical therapy for my hips and the exercises they gave me make me feel like I was run over by a car, so I think it’s working, lol.Report
Ha! Now we know how you sleep.Report
Doesn’t everybody sleep like that?Report
In the past month, I’ve spent two weeks in Europe, three days in the east coast, and a week in Hawaii. Finally home, and don’t have to get on another airplane for a whole month.
The flight home from North Carolina was on United; I emerged relatively unscathed. I missed the connection in Chicago because of weather. When I asked the flight attendants en route if I’d make it, they had no idea, because apparently all that high-tech communications equipment only transmits cat pictures. But they did book me on a later flight, so I got home only 90 minutes late.Report
It’s April, and I’m already behind on yard work and gardening. Weird spring. I have a post I need to finish. And the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out.Report
Friday: Dancing
Saturday: Laundry, chores, date and maybe more dancing. Will watch new MST3K while doing laundry.
Sunday: Walking around Brooklyn and making a leg of lamb roast.
Monday: 7:30 adjustment interview.Report
So so so so ready for my celebratory 4-day weekend.
Some of which celebrating will definitely consist of doing as little as possible in as comfortable a bed as possible.Report
