Jeremy Corbyn dodges calls to expel ‘9/11 sympathiser’ from Labour party
Pushed by David Cameron to throw Gerry Downing out of the party amid claims he also defended the so-called Islamic State, Mr Corbyn refused to reply.
It came as Mr Downing told The Telegraph that the 9/11 suicide bombers “didn’t blow up the World Trade Centre because they’re bad people” but because they were “agitated” about what was happening in their country.
The retired bus driver, who describes himself as a close friend of John McDonnell, was expelled from the Labour party in August last year for “publicly supporting another political party” and told his views were against the aims of the party.

Also, it’s worth pointing out that on this particular point, Downing is right. People don’t engage in suicide terrorism because they’re cackling Batman villains; they do it because they have grievances, terrestrial or theological, that they wish to express violently against their targets. Now obviously whether those grievances are legitimate or not is another matter entirely, but still, that particular point is not an incorrect one.Report
