It is really depressing to me that a list that, to my understanding, was intended to be private and only up for all of 12-twelve hours and managed to have 70ish names 14 of which were violent allegations....and everyone, okay many seem to only be worried about the men listed. Which I am concerned about false or misidentified people as well. However, ABSOLUTELY no concern the treatment of the women who are sharing their
experiences with each other to warn of dangerous situations to avoid. The author is then forced to out herself to get ahead of those who would out her and is now subject who knows what kind of backlash. But we all know there will be backlash and only for her and only incidentally for men on the list. I am disgusted by it all
I find my self torn. In my capacity as the administrator of a Railway Museum City of New Orleans speaks to me.....in my other profession of Textile Conservator and having actually worked on THE Star Spangled Banner I have a certain wish for it to remain the national anthem. Though I really don't like the song as well. Much prefer This Land is Your Land.
Best state song....OOOOOKLAHOMA! Where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.....
Thanks @jaybird yes it is. We are trying to look at it as an opportunity for us to start another project we have been talking about....a Makers Space if you know what those are. He can fall back to being an arborist and landscaper as he was before (though we sold a lot of the equipment) and he got 2 months severance. Still he will be looking for Journalist/Photographer jobs as that is what he loves.
Working we have big events every weekend until Christmas. Starting the 18th they won't see me until January sometime have a crazy amount of comp time to use.
And as a big Merry Christmas my husband got laid off from his job. The perils of working for a non-profit that did not do enough to diversify their funding a big, and I mean BIG grant did not come in this year and about a third of the staff was laid off.
I also am trying to still digest this. A lot of your story resonates with me. I was definitely an outsider in high school though I actually had a wide and varied social circle. I have scoliosis and freshman to Junior year wore a neck to hip back brace. Great timing right? add to that my identical twin did not have to wear a brace and I was always on the outside of social interactions granted a lot of that was my own doing. I dated the uncle of a classmate starting when I was 16 till I turned 18. We all worked together, were transplants from Boston to Oklahoma. He wanted to get married when I turned 18 thank god I was smart enough to say I love you but...no, I'm no where near ready for that. I have fond memories of that relationship. He was 29 when we started dating. Looking back now I question his choices in dating someone that young and abstractly think he crossed a line however I still believe the relationship was a positive in my life.
However, sexual abuse by a family friend, and two bosses at work from the ages of 12 to 15 probably means I was not your normal teenage girl (although since it also happened to my sister and my best friend perhaps I was normal). Did I seek out someone older because of my past? because I found boys my age dipsh*ts? because he was genuinely a nice guy if a little messed up himself? 45 years later and I still really can't tell you.
The earlier men absolutely were monsters. My boyfriend I think was not... others will see it differently.
I guess I share all this to echo @will-truman its not always so clear even for those of us intimately involved in the situations. I've been actively resisting the #metoo movement because though important it is not the way I want to share my story. Many of you here I consider my friends even though I don't know any of you in "real life" With the discussion on @Vikkram post and here I felt I had something to contribute.
Sorry @maribou this thread touched a nerve. (obviously) I absolutely did not mind people walking slow per se but more the ones oblivious to everyone around them. Slow and in the middle of the sidewalk or stairs. etc. Also groups taking up all available space disregarding everyone around them. Anyone walking slow and cognizant of others I had no problems with at all. Older people, people with small kids, people with infirmities I do not mind at all and would try to run interference on occasion to keep others from mowing them over.
It got to where I would walk at the very edge of the sidewalk and keep walking towards a group sprawled across and either keep walking or stop and inevitably they would run into me. And be pissed at me for being in their way.
There is also a special place in hell for people who stop to chat right at the top of stairs, outside doors, or any other place where 100s of others need to pass through.
I lived in NYC for 5 years and DC for 6 years and slow walking people still drive me nuts. Especially when they take over the whole sidewalk. What people don't realize is its like driving 30 mph on the interstate. Sidewalks are used for transportation to and from work and other activities. Keep to the right if you are an ambler and for God/Goddess sake on escalators keep right single file so others can walk around your slow a**
Finishing up the second weekend of Day Out With Thomas this weekend (six 12-14 hour days) Spent part of today figuring out how I am going to spend my 120 hours of comp/vacation time I have left this year ;)
Two more days then sleep on Monday and go see Bladerunner double feature woo hoo

@maribou I for one appreciate your moderation efforts. The constatnt bickering, disputes between commentators that hate each other and will argue minutia just because of who posted was getting very tiresome. Not to mention some of the disturbing defenses and arguments being made. (I come here to hear differing points of view and intelligent discussion there of. Not for diatribes and high school in fighting.)
