On “Cover Songs Better than “Africa”

Thanks Lee I love Richard Thompson will have to find that and check it out. Shoot Out the Lights is one of my favorite albums ever.

"

Kristen thanks this is a great column. Can't write much now but just shared this with my husband and we can't really define it it but there is a difference between a rendition of a song and a successful cover of a song.

The prospect of delicious dinners, libations, and scintillating conversation with you and Burt has me sorely tempted. Maybe I can at least get up sometime for a Leaguefest.

"

Safe travels Burt, I wish you well on your new adventure and your quest to live your best life. I'm kinda jealous to be honest.

On “Morning Ed: 9/11 and National Security

2003 blackout was the day I foolishly wore flip flops in for a quick trip to grad school at E 78th street between 5th and Madison. Had to walk all the way home to basically the Ditmars stop in Queens...five and a half miles IN FLIP FLOPS temperature in high 90's and high humidity ...it really sucked. Spent the rest of the night outside the local pub with the neighborhood gang till we had to go eat some ones ice cream that was at great risk of melting.

I wouldn't say WV won't ever decriminalize/legalize marijuana Oklahoma now has medical mj and the OKC police chief is recommending no jail time and smaller fines for possession (under 3 ounces) and busts for paraphernalia. Which I thought would never happen

@maribou Sending energy to your friend I hope they come to a better answer.

I would like to second your thanks to Sam for this gift it comes at a time when I needed it as well. Yesterday an old friend lost his battle with leukemia, his son, also a good friend of mine is dealing with not only the loss of his father but also with the fact that he did not get a project that his father wishes to see completed finished in time.

"

Sam my heart aches for you. I am so sorry for the loss of your good friend.

On “Morning Ed: Family {2018.08.16.Th}

As an identical twin I find [Fa9] absolutely horrifying (link is broken remove everything before http to read) They separated twins and triplets in adoptions to separate families to study nature vs nurture. the kids had separation anxiety issues among other things and no wonder

On “Democrats Left Turn Only

Joining @maribou and @atomickristin I'm over 40...cough okay....a wee bit over 50 I don't comment often or write much but I'm here all the time. Fillyjonk is around my age as well

On “The Church Doors Close Behind Me

@mike-dwyer Cave Hill is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have ever visited. Always try to go when I am in Louisville visiting my sister. I'm a little bit jealous of your final resting place.

"

I'm sorry for your loss @burt-likko and what a lovely remembrance. I too have wandered from my Catholic upbringing. I remember growing up when we would get together with my Boston Grand-parents and cousins who had moved to New York, Illinois and our family to Oklahoma. The cousins all asking each other how often do you all actually attend mass? Answers varied from on big church holidays to the most common answer, when we are with Grammy and Grampa.

On “Oscar’s Travelogue

My condolences Oscaron your losses. I lost my dad suddenly and unexpectedly five years ago. I hope eventually your last meeting will bring you some closure.

Thank you for the evocative recounting of your road trip. One of our favorite things is to find new things on each trip. Friends of mine moved to Phoenix from Denver and recounted having to push down asphault divots made by their car in the parking lot. Of course I also spent one of the coldest nights of my life camping outside of Phoenix got to love the high Desert. It is beautiful there I wish you amazing new experiences in your time there.

On “You are Going to Die

@atomic-geography Dude! Glad your still with us. And I think you have a point there that people are afraid to live. They think oh I'll do that later now I have to do "X" because that is what I am supposed to do now. We aren't guaranteed a later... live in the now

Course I need to take my own advice. I was very fortunate when I was younger (gen-Xer over 50 but damn it I still feel like I'm 21....not in body but mind) lived several different places, got to travel. I desperately want to travel more now other than occasional road trip. But life has gotten in the way of the grand plans. But I always try to find or do something new even if it's just a small thing.

On “Saturday!

@jaybird Short background My brother-in-law, husband and myself have for the past 3 or 4 years been indoctrinating...er teaching the kids (now 14-18 years old) about RPGs. Mostly DnD and Red Markets.

My BIL and 14y/o nephew have started playing Battletech. They invited myself, husband and my 16 y/o stepson who is with us for the summer to a game. It was a short (3 hour) grinder session to let us all learn the rules. I think my BIL had some unseen figurines but can't be certain of that as I know very little about the characters.

I died spectacularly once trying to DFA my BIL and he blew up my ammo. Once my son figured out don't worry about getting killed since then you get a bigger, badder mech fun was had by all. I did manage to get one kill. We are going to play again soon

"

I will be playing Battletech for the first time tomorrow. Haven't got a clue anything about this game. Should be fun

On “Weekend!

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a wonderful time in Christchurch. Keep trying to get down to your neck of the woods I have friend in Auckland so yeah! Free crash space. Have to find enough time off work to make the trip worth it ..and save up for airfare...not a cheap trip

On “Weekend!

Catching up after camping at the lake for a week. Have about 7ish loads of laundry to do. Still haven't totally unpacked the suburban (only perishables and clothes unloaded so far). Them catching up on emails. Where we were is like the Bermuda triangle for cell phone coverage. None of the big 4 carriers have ANY coverage in the area...which was great last week but the backlog for tomorrow...I want to go back to the lake. Also will be installing lighting into my new work studio.

On “Weekend!

A little rain this morning should be up to 92 by this afternoon. Trying to finish up things at work because after Saturday I will be off till after the 4th! Going camping and darn it I won't have any cell phone connection... so have to have everything lined up for them to deal without me for a week with no communication.

On “Sunday!

On “Anthony Bourdain Dead at 61

This makes me so very sad. Like @roland-dodds and @mike-dwyer Bourdain was a huge influence on how I interact with food and the world. He will be missed.

On “What We Do Know, Don’t Know, and Need to Know About Knowledge
