Might not have been lighting (barring any scorch marks) My husband is an arborist he says that the snow storm then the hurricane probably stressed the tree and weakened it so that the rain and wind storm took it down. People think well it survived that it must be a strong tree...not necessarily.
Sorry about your Kazzstle (props James) hope the rafters are OK but glad the tree did not just squash it like a bug

I was in my first year of grad school. Did not have class that day was home out in Queens close to LaGuardia. Always, always listened to the news in the morning I did not that day. My sister called me hysterical telling me a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I turn on the TV in time to see the second plane. Lost TV reception, antennas were on the towers. Then my dad calls still on my cell with my sister I kept trying to get them to tell me what was going on. Decided to go downstairs to my landlords (they had cable). Mr. Boiardi looked at me like I was insane when I told him. We sat and watched the towers fall.
Russell's post from last year really spoke to me. I could have written the last two sentences of that post "However, what I always remember most of all is how full New York City was, in the days and weeks after the attacks, of decency and compassion and sacrifice. Which is why I will always consider it in some way my home, no matter where I live. Why I will always love it more than any other place on earth."
I still have a very hard time seeing anything connected with that day.
ATK is fantastic I have also found a great cookbook called Radically Simple. Fairly quick recipes, minimal ingredients but everything I have tried so far Yummy!
I'm having trouble signing up...I think I am in the right place I saw a message from Kazzy tried to read it and got a message saying I didn't belong to the league (tried not to take that personally) I could not for the life of me see a place to sign up a team. Don't tell me women aren't allowed to play :)
Mary thanks for your comment. I got to this site by following a link to something Jason wrote. Being a geek I find the name of LoOG funny. I also stuck around precisely because for the most part the writers and commentators ARE gentlemanly. It is hard, or at least I did find it hard to comment here at first. Partly because the site is mostly men I thought as a female I would not be given the same respect as men and partly because though I am not dumb the level of intellectual discourse here can be intimidating (and then Mike shilling says something :) ) As to the first part I was wrong. The gents here have been nothing if not welcoming and supportive. I do wish more women would comment though I suspect there are quite a few that are here lurking as I once did.

Johanna I've got your back, I think Tom was out of line
"Just because I happen to hold a similar opinion as my spouse does not warrant suspicion that he influenced me or that the basis of my argument is somehow diminished because of it."
Dang I wish I knew how to bold text. The first part of this statement I think is not quite fair people will wonder how much you and James talk about the blog off line but you are right that does not mean James unduly influences your opinion. You are 100% correct that even if he does influence you in some ways that DOES NOT diminish your argument. Your arguments should stand and fall on their own.
All of know of other commentators who seem to be friends with each other and support each others ideas but we do not discount out of had their arguments because of it. It may not be true but seems to me that because Johanna is a woman some around here (not all mind you) think of course she will look to her husband on what to think so really she is just an echo chamber of James nothing to see here
Welcome to the gentle(wo)men's club Meredith :) Thank you for your comments and I hope you stick around.
@Glyph I still don't see how you can't see that people could reasonably (i.e. without looking to) take offense at Akin's "Legitimate rape" comment but you made really fair arguments and were very gentlemanly about it I for one do not think you were trying to offend. But also understand some of us have more skin in the game and it is personal to us.
Mark No Erik is not a dick far from it. This was meant as sarcasm
I was trying to play off of Tod and Chris. Specifically Rose not on the masthead...yet
Well you know its a point of pride for Erik to quietly defy all the clamor for him to do what people think he should do when they think he should do it.
