Weirdly enough, just happened to watch Clue two nights ago because it came up on Amazon prime recommended. They had all three endings, with a silent movie style title card between them.
I can see why it didn’t get big play at the time - the front half is a lot less over the top than the back half and so muddles thru a bit before everyone really starts chewing the scenery.
The timing on 2009 was a bit different. The crisis actually precipitated in Sept 2008, before the election when Bush was still prez. By the time Obama took over, the crisis was in a different phase. Dems had the house on lockdown, and the Senate, while not filibuster proof (cause Coleman/Franken was still being litigated) was still more or less a Dem show. Though it was limited by the rightward most leaning dudes in the caucus like Nelson & in hindsight Lieberman.
For that matter, the GOP only started to get any traction at all
It is most interesting how many films on your list for this decade are legendary for their production issues & problems that could have credibly scuttled the entire project.
I have not read the book, thanks for the recommendation. I agree with the tone comparisons you made between the two movies. Though I last saw the Wayne version circa 2000 and the Bridges version right when it came out in theaters. (Remember those?)
What’s particularly ironically tone deaf about the China comment is that the Vegas Tourism marketeers have spent a lot of effort, successfully, this past decade to increase the number of visitors from China. It’s now fifth place behind Canada, Mexico, UK, and Australia. And was on pace to overtake Australia in a year or two.
If anything, Dennis Haysbert should retire from Allstate, because they have started to break the fourth wall with him. (And now have Tina Fey to accompany Dean Winters)
If anything, the criticism of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington would be the same as that the West Wing gets, naive wish fufillment. (A criticism I don't generally agree with)
Ok, that clarifies something from the Odyssey magazine reading days of my youth - there was the first learned fact that Alpha Centauri was the closest star, then the more refined fact that no it’s actual Proxima Centauri - but also Alpha Centauri is a double star. So until just now, I thought Proxima *was* the second of the double star, not a third star.
I was about to say, 'what a dunce, what about his refund' but looking it up, they didn't do withholding in the 20s (or the 30s, only starting it up again in the middle of Double Dubya Two.
