On “Wednesday Writs: Brief Edition, Including Van Buren v United States

L4 - the Wikipedia indicates there was a lot of maneuvering by both sides over Elvis Presley’s draft status and fulfillment, but in the end he decided to just go regular soldier route. (A decision made somewhat easier that we were in the interregnum between Korea & Vietnam)

"

L1: Van Burens are having their moment in the legal system this week.

On “Danny Dreamer Does Turkey Dinner

I'll say again that Danny is picking the wrong darn Sally.

Fancy Sally is ordering desert and has hardly eaten her meal.

Ordinary Sally is ordering food that is both cheaper and that she is probably going to actually eat.

Pompeo is so politically toxic that he had to be strong-armed out of running for senate in Kansas out of fear he would tank a vital seat in Republican’s efforts to hold their slim majority.

In hindsight he probably would have won.

On “Wednesday Writs Pie Edition

L5 - Dave Chapelle recently announced a similar thing; Netflix was airing his back catalog from his Comedy Central days, but Chapelle wasn’t seeing any money from it. Legally, Netflix seems to be in the right, as they seemed to have paid Comedy Central a ‘fair’ price and the dispute is actually between Chapelle and Comedy Central. But Netflix pulled the episodes anyway, because they have a bigger current deal directly with Chapelle and want to stay in his good graces.

Also no golf carts, so they are hoofing those two miles.

On “Tom Sawyer

He did up front threaten violence on those who would do so.

On “Danny Dreams of Football

“The sally you’d rather take to the football game” seems awfully high-maintenance if you ask me.

On “There’s a Bad Winner In Every Office

Per Wikipedia, Hoover won Westchester County New York in both 1928 and 1932 (where New Rochelle is located) and would gain some votes in the second election. (Though Roosevelt gained a lot more votes compared to Al Smith, but not quite enough to beat Hoover in the county)

On “Wonder What The Statue of Liberty Thinks About

‘Gadabout’ per the googlez is ‘a habitual pleasure seeker’ “Walter was a restless charmer and gadabout”

This seems the complete opposite of Wilson’s personal and professional reputation.

On “SNL: Election Night 2016

There’s two or three New Hampshire towns that all meet at midnight and cast their votes right then.

West Wing dramatized this. The one big thing they got wrong is nobody doing this I think is under 50 years old. The other is that now I believe everyone is in the same family, or maybe all work for the same summer season resort.

On “Breakfast Mail

Poor guy cleared his spam folder only to get catfished anyway.

I would guess that it’s made up to be a play on words of bunker fuel, and bunk as in malarkey.

The only references to PFD itself are process flow diagram, and the Permanent Fund Division, who are the peeps in Alaska who manage their oil money. (Which started well after this cartoon)

On “An Example Of Dystopian Leftist Culture

Honestly Jaybird, the above is pretty weak,

But I would ask those on the other ‘side’ from Jaybird, are any or all of the following left wing dystopias? And could they, or could they not happen in the USA?

1) George Orwell’s 1984
2) Terry Giiliam’s Brazil
3) the actual real world USSR as governed from 1924 to 1991

(It is notable that both Orwell & Gilliam have/had decidedly left leaning politics but have critiques of societies that could conceivably by construed as going too far along this line)

(you have to cross your eyes and squint real hard to see, say, Ayn Rand doing anything close to this for her ‘side’)

On “The Days of Political Sport

Ah yeah, that’s right, this was the Rum Romanism and Rebellion election. (As well as Gone to the White House HA HA HA)

Doing a comic about Cleveland V Blaine in 1928 would be doing a Carter v Ford comic today

ETA - ‘dried rats & pickelled cats’ seems to be a Briggs original, and would be a good line of talk radio these days.

And the Never Blaines.

That's a fair point, didn't notice it the first time around

On “New Job Numbers: Slowed Gains, Unemployment Down, No California Numbers

There was a graph a I saw on Twitter that showed that unlike every other recent recession, the loss of jobs in services was greater than and preceded a loss in the ‘goods’ sector.

Which makes sense as most ‘industrial’ processes were going more or less as they were, while stuff like the entire hospitality industry, along with stuff associated with the economy of a central business district was all shut down.

( plus, there are more women who have been laid off/ furloughed than men, which I think may be the first time ever for a recession)

There’s a ton of money being pumped into the economy that probably keeps aggregate demand and thus industrial production up. But I do wonder, and would probably anticipate, that there will be a dip industrial employment as the ‘service economy employed’ part of aggregate demand remains weak, and the money printer no longer goes brrrr.

On “Michigan Supreme Court Rules Against Gov. Gov. Whitmer Emergency Orders

I would say that most legislatures would give the executive temporary emergency authority in a time of crisis.

But the Michigan legislature is now run by Republicans, who absolutely don’t give a darn about this crisis. And are in power due to a gerrymander; more people voted for the Dems in the 2018 legislative elections.

On “Danny Dreamer Looks For Easy Money

One character drawn in a really racist way, is, of course, bad enough, and a big ol Yikes. But I’m almost surprised that the shell game man isn’t himself drawn an ethnic stereotype.

On “There’s a Braggart Consumer In Every Office

Stupefying is one of those words that has evolved to mean almost the exact opposite of how it used to be used.

Eta
And i had to look at this sentence three times to make sure there wasn't a spelling error, because the two 'used' are pronounced (at least to me) in two different ways.
