On “Mayor Pete

The two of them should do a series of Lincoln-Douglas debates across the country. And they would be required to share an RV while they did it. I would watch that show.

"

I have a pet theory that Harris actually doesn't like a certain kind of black person. Kind of hoping she gets the nomination so I can take it for a test drive.

I also think she is definitely an asshole. Mayor Pete? He's a guy I'd like to have in my disc golf league so we could be doubles partners.

"

We have watched all the debates and myself, my wife and her 75 year-old parents all commented how he just sounds like a normal person. I love his Religious Left position. I love that he is pitching himself as the person you most want to see on a debate stage with Trump.

Agreed he is an easy VP pick. America may not be ready for a gay president, but I think it can handle a gay VP.

I would for sure vote for him if given the opportunity. I have already decided to switch to Democrat so I can vote in the primaries next spring. Hope he is still around, but usually things are all settled by the time KY weighs in.

"

Reality TV stars and shady real estate guys have also not historically been presidents but strange things happen. ;)

On “Kevin Williamson’s Smallest World

I think an Ideal form of conservatism still exists, but it is increasingly drowned out by a politicized conservatism that is best defined by gridlock and greed.

On “Who Are We Kidding? Vote for Biden

Most people consider Obama an honorary Gen Xer. Harris misses it by one year so I would count her. Booker is one of ours. We need to get our time in the sun, although maybe we are just better as mayors and governors and jaded Congresspeople. Or Supreme Court justices (big ups to Kavanaugh!)

On “Democratic Debates: Biden in the Middle

I think it's because they probably understand the lives of minorities generally get better every decade but bad policy could actually push the country backwards.

"

I tried digging into Gabbard's proposals after the first debate and honestly, they were pretty thin. My wife thinks I just like her because she is easy on the eyes, but her Afghanistan stance was what pulled me in. I was passionately against that war from the start so she has my sympathies there.

I will also say it's bizarre to hear prominent members of the party that so vigorously hated Bush for his wars suggest that we had to stay in Afghanistan to help with women's rights, etc. Sounds like qe should just deploy troops to every Third World country if that has become our responsibility.

"

We've already had the conversation about how much damage an Old Man Racist can do vs. a social democrat. To me it's not even comparable. It's marginal damage for a few years vs. huge damage for generations. So I understand their calculation if they actually think Trump's policies are good.

On “Amy, I Think I Could Stay With You

I agree with the OP that she could probably be a good president, but I'm also shocked how quickly not just the author but Dems in general dismiss her behavior. Al Franken was run out of the senate for frankly a lot less. For shame...

On “Democratic Debates: Biden in the Middle

This. Even if the Kremlin was running the Gabbard fan club, that doesn't change her attack on Harris. Was it substantive? If yes, then her appeal to Russians is honestly immaterial.

"

I would suggest that most of his supporters will vote for him in spite of his racism, not because of it. But most people see a LOT less racism than you do, so maybe they have no idea.

"

Defense against the Left losing their collective shit if/when Trump gets elected. It's going to get ugly.

"

Pretty clear that some of our liberal friends are loading up the 'Russian bot defense' proactively. I like the idea of making them show their work, but that seems a big ask. (Is it too early to start stockpiling ammo?)

"

It's starting to feel like Hillary 2.0 in that the Dems are going to run another terrible campaign and then get really mad about losing. I'm sure several of these candidates would be okay presidents but they need to win first and I'm concerned that none of the frontrunners can get there. Ironically, some of the 2nd tier candidates would probably do better against Trump but it seems the party faithful don't want to consider that as an option.

On “Love Will Win

I'm a University of Louisville alumni and fan. Most of you probably know our athletics have a huge PR problem. Our last AD was a builder and knew the system. He built a truly national program. But he was a big part of the problems there. So they fired him and hired the marketing director for the AD job. He didn't have the resume to be an AD but he knows PR. Right man for the time.

I kind of feel like if Williamson focused on international relations and improving the race conversation for 4 years it would be time well-spent.

On “Win it Warren

"Are you tired of the Presidency being dominated by people from the Ivy League? Elizabeth Warren received her undergrad degree from the University of Houston and her law degree from Rutgers Law School. Both of these are public institutions. She is the rare person to make it from public schools to an Ivy League professorship."

If you are tired of the Presidency being dominated by Ivy League graduates you should totally vote for someone that was a professor there instead!

Ugh...

On “Love Will Win

My wife was raised in a right-of-center Methodist church. It was still basically like that when we started dating. In the last 10 years a growing segment of the congregation has joined the Christian Left. The recent SSM kerfuffle has only widened the schism. Fascinating to watch...

I would say I am pretty sympathetic to them, except for the Jesus part.

"

I thought Buttigieg was by far the best of the contenders. This might not be his year but the sky is the limit for him.

I also with Klubachar was better. I think she is very sincere but she doesn't seem as polished. I also think Warren looks worse every time I watch her. Four years of her would be almost as painful as the current resident of the WH.

"

Watch or listen to her on the Rubin Report. She doesn't present very well on the debate stage IMO. If she polished that up she would be a good counter to Trump.

"

I would say she definitely got the best reactions but I didn't like some of her race language. She seemed less ID on the Rubin Report.

On “Vote Beto Because Why Not

Boohoo. Please, please nominate a Progressive. Seriously. I'd love to put that experiment to rest for another decade.

Most of the stuff moderates are looking for would be Obama 2.0. No one is asking for Ted Cruz.

On “Love Will Win

I've already commented about this but I recommend the long interview (71 minutes) with Marianne Williamson on the Rubin Report (available on YouTube and podcast). I was REALLY impressed with her. Super-smart, obviously a student of history, etc.

I agree 100% that she actually understands why Trump won more than almost any Democrat I have heard from (*ahem* including the folks here). She knows the president is the moral compass (and quotes FDR on the topic). She would be a general contractor for everything else, managing a cabinet, which is the way it should work.

I like Mayor Pete, I'm warming on Harris but if I was voting in the Democratic primary today, I would vote for her.

On “And Then There Were Three

I am on vacation in northern Michigan this morning, in a lovely little lake house with our extended family. My wife and I are enjoying 4G with Verizon while my nieces are frantically walking around outside with their phones in the air trying to get anything on their Sprint phones. This seems ridiculous in 2019.

Sprint and Dish are both customers of ours at work, so we're obviously interested to see how it shakes out. Going to be interesting...
