So there’s a pretty big race going on tomorrow. It’s also Race Weekend here in Ottawa. And Fast & Furious 6 is in theatres. So, consider this an open thread on racing, going fast, personal bests, cars or anything else that might be on your mind.

I just watched the Mythbusters Indycar episode and despite my lack of interest in auto racing, I have to admit that it made me more interested in motor sports. I doubt it’ll be enough to get me to sit down and watch the race this weekend but those cars are amazing. Four women driving in Indianapolis this year, by the way.Report
I haven’t seen that particular episode, but I remember reading an article written by a sportswriter who went along for some practice laps with a premier NASCAR driver (if memory serves, it was the insufferable Rick Reilly and the slightly less insufferable Jeff Gordon*). The writer described how the driver could sense minute pressure differentials which indicated where cars were in relation to him. He described the tension in his forearms as he took him smoothly through a turn at absurd speeds. He discussed the physical toll it took on his (the writer’s) body and how the driver managed to carry on a conversation as if nothing was happening.
It didn’t necessarily make me more interested in watching auto sports, but it gave me a greater respect for the men and women who do it. It is much more than 4 hours of left turns.
* Funny Jeff Gordon story. I was sitting in Brother Jimmy’s, a local BBQ chain on the UWS of Manhattan. A couple friends and I were enjoying bottomless ribs and pitchers. Eventually, we look over and see that sitting right next to us, within an arm’s reach, is none other than Jeff Gordon (his dining partner might have also been a driver… he had that look… but we didn’t recognize him). We debated going over to say hi but figured against it. We didn’t want to be “those guys”. But, as the beer flowed, we decided that a better plan was to sit there making race cars noises, under the drunken illusion that people uninvolved in our “conversation” could not hear us. On our way out, we stopped by to say hi and he was not particularly interested. It probably had something to do with the race car noises.
Despite our highest hopes, his NASCAR was not parked out in front as we left.Report
