The first time I heard EPMD’s “You Gots To Chill”, was on Yo, MTv Raps back in the 80’s. This was before I was familiar with either Zapp’s “More Bounce to the Ounce” or Kool and the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie”.

In 1994, Pulp Fiction was released and that was the first time I ever really listened to “Jungle Boogie”.

Side note: Dick Dale’s version of “Misirlou” was also on that soundtrack and mom was walking through the room when the TV was playing that song and she immediately made me pause the movie and she yelled at me about how that song was playing at one of the dances she had to chaperone back when she was a teacher and IT WAS SO LOUD that she couldn’t breathe because it vibrated EVERYTHING and taking a deep breath would make her feel dizzy.

And it wasn’t until the YouTube era that I sat down and actually searched out the other song that got sampled heavily in “You Gots To Chill” and, the first time I listened to it, I was sure it was a novelty song. After a few more times listening to it, I understand that… no. It is its own genre.
