Weekend Plans Post: Winding Down
Work has been nuts for about a year now. They were supposed to be able to let me move off of this team project and move onto that team project, but we had to rebuild a couple of servers and QA and CM put their foot down about moving engineers away from the whole “building production servers” thing but I was promised to that team for “reachback” and, good gravy, I have been reached back for a week now. And that’s on top of the silly dumb stuff like hard drives needing to be swapped out of a RAID or CMOS batteries dying or the documentation people needing someone who knows how to use the system and…
Man. I just want to move to the new project.
Maybe next week.
But the good news about all of the chaos going on means that I got my 40 hours in by Thursday night so… THREE DAY WEEKEND!
I was going to be excited that it was a four-day weekend but, once again, I misjudged what weekend it was. So I get a couple of long weekends in a row. You know what? Maybe I’ll take next Friday off too.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This weekend will be spent doing some light chores, light errands, and goofing off with the cats and figuring out better mitigations to keep them from running outside. Seriously, they get outside, they run around in the rocks and chase grasshoppers and get freaked out by cars driving past and run away from us when we’re just trying to get them back inside.
Say what you will about elderly cats, but their idea of a good time was running out to the porch and staying on the porch. “Get back inside!” would get a querulous mew in response and they’d walk back inside.
Now we have to run around with the laser pointer and the fishing pole and be ready to bend down and snatch them up. So we’re learning to lock them in the kitty room when we go out.
Or, if it’s first thing in the morning and someone is still asleep, in the bedroom. The upside of doing that is getting boudoir shots when people wake up.
Oh, and game night on Saturday.
So… what’s on your docket?

Why are you posting all these different pictures of the same cat?Report

I’m sure that one’s been done many times by now, but still I felt pretty good about coming up with it here.Report
Probably sitting inside. The upper high pressure system that drives the monsoon here has set up again. In addition to the usual tropical moisture it brings in, it’s also carrying moisture from the remnants of tropical storm Harold. The NWS forecast discussion suggests they’re guessing at anything more detailed than, “It’s going to rain. Probably a couple of inches. Maybe as much as six in places.”
Well, at least I’ve decided what goes on the next story panel for the granddaughters. It will be full of finicky details, so I’ll probably work on that while it rains.Report
We’re all expecting a full report on the aquifers after these Western state water events.Report
The yard needs mowed, so hopefully I can get up early to mow before it gets too hot. I also have some window trim that needs to be primed and then I need to paint that and the siding panels that were put up to replace some rotten stuff. Again, need to get this done early before it gets too hot, which is a pretty narrow window at the moment.Report
It is 95 degrees at 1100 here in Kansas, with an expected high of 103. Can’t wait to get back to Colorado tomorrow!Report
My 32nd football officiating season starts tonight. I’d be more excited but I hardly slept last night. I’m getting my house ready to sell and 30 years of benign neglect are doing a number on the ol’ bank account.Report
Dropped middle daughter off at William & Mary for her first year… which will be her Junior year. As homeschoolers we take advantage of the Virginia program that guarantees transfers to any VA school based on grades. Basically she graduates HS with an Associates Degree, then enters her 3rd year at W&M but at Sophomore age… confused?
Anyhow, since we were practically already there Lady Marchmaine and I continued on down to VA Beach for an anniversary getaway (#27). First time to our ‘local’ beach… interesting place, it is.Report
oops, forgot to mention the VA program is transfer from community college – which is where we ‘finish’ high school.Report
I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to Sinead O’Connor in the last couple of weeks (who hasn’t?) and one of the songs that shows up a lot in the rotation is her interpretation of “I am stretched on your grave”.
I really like how she’s doing it over a hip-hop beat but beyond that there isn’t really anything spectacular in the interpretation. I mean, it’s a good song. I listen to that and say “She’s really talented.”
So I went back to Dead Can Dance’s version.
The part at 2:15 where he sings “And would still be your shelter from rain and from storm… Aaaand”
And where he sings “and”, I’ve always heard it as a groan of “OOoooh”.
It gives me goosebumps. It gives me goosebumps even now.
Sinead was always a singer that broke my heart when I listened to her. That makes it somewhat notable when I stumble across a song that did it better than she did.Report
