Weekend Plans Post: ‘Twas the night before Christmas
Apparently “tinsel” only refers to a long thread. When in long narrow strips not attached to thread, it is called “lametta”.
Last week at work was the crazy one where everybody was in a rush to finish, finish, finish their big deals and their paperwork and their jira stories. This week was a lot quieter. I finished this, I finished that, I had a blocker and wrote my boss about and and got an out of office email. Okay, I wrote his backup and got an out of office email. Okay, I wrote the logistics person myself and asked what the status was on the thing that my boss emailed him about last week and got an out of office email.
Okay. I will edit my documents instead.
Seriously, when the developer called me to ask about expanding /var, my heart leapt into my throat and I had a blast for about 30 minutes. And then… back to Word.
And, well, the last timesheet has been signed, the last report has been filled out, the last server rebuilt and rebooted, and the last weekly status report has been handed in.
Which means that vacation starts TONIGHT.
We’re doing something nice. Mom had covid about a month ago and she had one of the milder strains. She basically slept 16 hours a day and spent the rest of her time taking vitamins. So we did some calculations and said that, yep, she’s not going to give it to us if we go over there and we’re not going to give it to her and so… we get to go over to Mom’s for Christmas Eve. She’s getting pierogis and sour cream and we’re going to sit around and open presents (token ones, this year) and talk about how crazy the year has been and how we hope that next year won’t be crazy.
And, after that, this weekend is Christmas weekend. When I was a kid, that meant playing with the new toys. Now that I am an adult, that means playing with the new games. (The Steam Sale! The Gog.Com sale! Epic Game Store is giving away a new game every day until Christmas!)
We’ve gotten the deliveries from the grocery store and have checked our supplies and we are poised to have a weekend with minimal errands, minimal chores, and minimal stress. The kitties have their packets, Maribou has her books and box sets and podcasts, and I still have Cyberpunk 2077.
From us and ours to you and yours: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
So… what’s on your docket?

Attempting my first prime rib roast for dinner tomorrow. After that, absolutely nothing!
Merry Christmas, y’all.Report
So, how did it turn out? I did a beef tenderloin that was magnificent.Report
Not too bad for my first go. I’ll definitely be trying that again. I need to refine my seasoning technique and I might monkey with the time and temperature to bump the roast a bit closer to medium rare but overall, a hit.Report
Drove the RV to the cousins, and just finished watching Christmas Vacation, outside, with a projector and a screen. Surrounded by patio heaters and under electric blankets.
Merry Christmas all!Report
I’ve flown up to Auckland to spend a few days with my parents. My sister hosted Christmas this year, so we went to Hamilton today for Christmas Lunch.Report
Not sure. Took most of this week off from work which feels odd in a year when I can’t travel or even really go shopping. Stocked up on groceries earlier this week so I don’t even need to do that. Might make potato soup this weekend. Zoom knit group is tomorrow so there’s that – and yes, the person hosting it is holding it even though it’s the day after Christmas.
Probably next week I will go back in to campus (unless they are chasing us away, there are two separate reasons they might do that) and work on a manuscript, seeing as I got all the data collected and partially crunched last week, this is the fun part. (Revising is the not-fun part but I can put that off for a little while if I at least get a decent draft written)
I got a lot of new books for Christmas so I will probably spend part of the weekend reading. I also finished one of the ones I was reading on so that frees up a slot for another.Report
Epic Game Store is giving away Darkest Dungeons for *FREE*.
If you’ve been intrigued by Fish’s comments, you can wander over there and pick up a copy for zip, zilch, nada.Report
