Hello Ladies and Gents, ordinary and otherwise. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? The news is this: tomorrow we will begin loading Mon Tiki Largo on to a truck and with a little luck all of her parts will be in Montauk by Friday afternoon, and with a little more luck she will be swimming my Monday.
Through the course of building MTL I’ve had thoughts about various things that are of interest to the commentariat: the minimum wage, class and education as it interacts with vocation, universal basic income, and other things people like to talk about. Most recently I had some thoughts on the “Maker Movement”, which James Fallows was nice enough to publish on his blog.
But mostly I have not been doing much writing.
I could say that’s because the process of building a giant catamaran hasn’t left me with the free time to write, but that would be a lie.
The truth is that I have had many nights alone in the shop with not much to do, and if I were inclined I could have spent that time writing out my thoughts.
I haven’t done this because, as the saying goes, talk is cheap, and in Mon Tiki Largo I have an accounting of and testament to my ideas and values that is more vivid than anything I might write.
The above picture shows the “dry-fit” of Mon Tiki Largo in the parking lot outside our shop in Holbrook. Since the picture was taking she been disassembled in preparation for the move.
The below picture is of a few of the guys who helped me build her: a laid-off “knowledge worker”, a felony parolee, and a naturalized Nigerian-American citizen. Provocative, no?
Also, after 30 years of wanting one, I finally bought a 12-string guitar. Come on out to Montauk and we’ll ride on one of my boats and sing songs!
She is gorgeous! I can’t wait to see her with the masts up and in the water.
