Vatican to Replace Diplomat Who Set Up Kim Davis Meeting | Advocate.com
The Vatican is replacing its controversial ambassador to the U.S., who arranged the meeting between Pope Francis and antigay Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis last fall.
Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò will leave the position of apostolic nuncio, the equivalent of an ambassador, and will be replaced by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, a French-born clergyman who is currently the nuncio to Mexico, Catholic magazine America reports, citing Sandro Magister, a blogger who covers the Vatican.
The Vatican is not expected to confirm the news until the Obama administration has agreed to the new nuncio’s appointment, the magazine notes, but it adds that “reliable sources” expect an official announcement before Easter, which falls on March 27 this year. Because of his experience in Mexico, Pierre may well emphasize immigration issues, The Washington Post reports.

Now that this is well and truly old news… I checked with my peeps (one of whom is in daily contact with person who actually acted as the in-person go between for the Pope and Kim Davis) and, at the risk of sounding like Kimmie, I can now confirm that this is not only spin, but false spin. I can’t say more than that, but sometimes the simple narrative is true. Vigano turned 75 and the Pope accepted his resignation; the most you could say is that as a B16 fellow, the transition period is over, and certain positions like the American Nunciature will go to folks who have cultivated their F1 relations over the past 3 years.
His replacement, Pierre, is JP2/B16/Diplomatic corps lifer – so no hopey/changey pick there… The interesting thing is that as Nuncio to Mexico he’s partly responsible for the scorching delivered last month by F1 to the Mexican bishops. So, somehow he has managed to distance himself from that and gratiate himself w/F1… but that’s what the diplomatic corps has always done.Report
