Weekend!
It has been a harried month or so where every weekend had something going on. These normally aren’t so bad if work is slow because of the phenomenon of the right one or two people going on vacation every week for a couple of months (you know the phenomenon, yeah, we can’t get the numbers for that report until Bob From Accounting gets back and he’s in Orlando having “Small World” re-installed into the front of his head… and the person who needs the report will be leaving on vacation the Friday night before the Monday that Bob gets back and so things can wait until everybody’s in the office again).
Well, everybody went on vacation in June. They’re all back and they’ve all been back.
Which means that this last month has been crazy at work too.
So this weekend is the first weekend in a long while that nothing really is scheduled. We don’t have to entertain, we don’t have to hang out, and we don’t have to be “on”. So we’re just going to decompress.
Hit the various errand places that need to be hit and do the chores that need to be done and have the space to play the games that need to be played.
Which is good because things start getting crazy again starting next Monday.
So… what’s on your docket?

Next week starts my pre-semester meetings; the 20th is our first day of classes. So this is my last weekend to have “fun.” I’m driving to a small city about an hour away that has a yarn shop and a quilt shop, and am doing a stock-up trip at the bigger nicer grocery on the way home. Tomorrow and Sunday afternoon I am going to work on some of the projects I didn’t get enough done on this summer….Report
I’m in the same boat as @fillyjonk. Convocation week meetings next week and prepping syllabi for the semester. Tomorrow is Star Wars Legion tournament. I’m sure I’ll do poorly, as I haven’t played much, but it will be fun regardless of my performance. We might go to the local arts center on Sunday. There’s an animation exhibit and a couple of works from one of my colleagues.Report
Ah, yes. “Back To School”.
We’ve a good friend whose kiddo is fixing to go into 3rd grade and I keep being tempted to ask him about Going Back To School but his mom is one of the librarians at an adjacent school and asking him about it in front of her is likely to have a backlash.Report
This is one of my last 3-day weekends before school starts, so I probably need to take care of a long-put-off blood draw on Monday (nothing’s going on, just a bunch of “we have to look at this and adjust meds every 4-6 months” ones that I couldn’t be bothered to ruin a free day with earlier in the summer).
We have a long-term houseguest (a month? six weeks?) moving in on Friday and he’s a friend of mine, so there will no doubt be some settling-in-related hanging out going on.
Other than that, exactly what Jaybird said only s/read the books that need to be read for 90 percent of play the games that need to be played. And fewer chores/errands because my body is currently being a bit of a jerk. (It has its reasons.)
Really looking forward to not much of anything. My life has been lacking the contemplative quality of late.Report
Summer is quickly coming to an end for us and I’m looking forward to turning the page. My wife goes back to work on Monday, school starts on Wednesday and she will (thankfully) start going to bed at a reasonable time again and the structure will make our lives more predictable in a way that soothes my soul. So we’re making a quick list of those things we wanted to accomplish this summer and have not. The puppy needs his first swim trip. We have a Reds game with family next weekend. Birthday party for oldest daughter and niece. State Fair and maybe one last trip to the swimming hole. Youngest daughter is about to start her sophomore year of college and we’ll need to remind her to study, etc. This is definitely the time of year when I start to feel like things are under control a little more, start getting excited for fall and hunting season.Report
HOORAY!
I’m under contract to sell my house in California. Yes, there’s been some drama but I’ve reason to believe the escrow will close on time.
My offer to buy a house in Portland has just been accepted, mere moments before writing this comment. Yes, there are still inspections to go through but things looks pretty promising there too.
I’m moving to Portland in five weeks!
So what’s on my docket? PACKING.Report

My experience with people going on vacation is that you are busier because you need to cover their stuff tooReport
If they are on your team? Heck yeah.
If they are from another department? Hey. You just have to wait until they get back.Report
