Urgh…umm…Socialism and communism are nothing in this country. There is a small socialist party which has no power and slight influence in social media. Russia is a kleptocracy. Full stop. It’s not commie nor is it heading that way.

The only consistent thing about conservatives in my 57 years is they have always thought commies were just about to take over and nipping at their feet. That’s it. Free market, free trade, …lol…nope.

One of the most consistent facts about conservatives is that they are always seeing commies in the wood pile. Always. Always seeing it. It’s not there. The D’s are a center to liberal party. Even Bernie, the most prominent socialist type, is not that far out there. He’s been popular with some conservatives at times.Report

OK, but the article doesn’t claim that communism is big in this country. It says that “the progressive left moves toward an outright embrace of socialism” but that’s not central to its argument, which is about the right. I guess congratulations on finding the one criticism of the American liberal though.Report

If the Democratic Party were socialist – or even leftist, Joe Biden wouldn’t have broken the railroad strike before it started. That he sided with corporations in that fight is all you really need to know.Report

I really like this piece, except I’d change 2/3 of the “communism”s to “authoritarianism”s.Report

    • Philip H in reply to Pinky says:

very true. Most regimes that claim either socialism or communism are actually authoritarians in one flavor or another who simply want to red wash themselves. Lenin’s early years MIGHT have been truly communist, but beyond that …Report

      • Pinky in reply to Philip H says:

You can’t be communist without being authoritarian though. It’s not that they were pretending to be communist but were really authoritarian; they were being communist. Communism is both internally inconsistent across its many theories and externally inconsistent with reality, so you won’t find many “clean” examples, but that’s not for a lack of attempts.

It’s possible to lean socialist without being authoritarian, but only if everyone agrees with you.Report

Leninism, once you cut thru the dense thicket of jargon, really is just “Once we have power, everyone will have to do as we say,”

And this is really what a t we are seeing now in the Trumpist right. All the writings of the Claremont Institute, or people like Adrian Vermeule and his “Common Good Constitutionalism” or Ron DeSantis and his attacks on Disney, really amount to “Once we have power, everyone will have to do as we say.”Report

In true Leninist fashion, Donald Trump strikes a hammer blow against the plutocrat capitalist bosses by releasing limited edition collector card NFTs.

Sources say that if the entire collector set is aligned properly, they spell out “D-R-I-N-K-Y-O-U-R-O-V-A-L-T-I-N-E”Report
