Video Throughput: Doctor Who, or Why Space Telescopes are Smarter Than Giant Slugs
In this video throughput, I take on the classic Doctor Who episode The Twin Dilemma, which gives me a chance to talk about orbits, Kepler, Lagrange points and space eggs.
There are times I wish sci-fi writers, in whatever medium, would either have a solid science background, or be required to have an appropriate scientist proof their work for obvious errors.
I’m not talking about speculative tropes, like warp drives, but stuff like this, where basic (& holy cow is this basic) orbital mechanics is tossed out the window. I can just hear my satellite dynamics prof (Dr. Kammer) having a field day with something like this.Report
I watched the Colin Baker episodes once. A long time ago. I never felt any urge to repeat the experience. However, I didn’t realize how many people besides Colin Baker were culpable.Report
