You might have heard tell there is still a lot of talk about the last election even though some parts have started working on this years, and many folks look ahead to 2022, 2024, and beyond. We turn down the noise on the debates surround the 2020 election, legislation like HR1 and HR4 in Congress, actions by states, and all sorts or takes and conspiracy theories and turn up the information with writer, poll worker, election expert, and noted Ballot Fairy Genya Coulter on how elections really work, what happened in 2020, and what needs to happen going forward to maintain the foundational piece to our system of government, free and fair elections.
Genya’s articles mentioned:
The Ballad of the Magical Ballot Fairies at Ordinary Times
Turning NBA arenas into polling places might be a disaster in The Washington Post
Great stuff, just took a listen on a walk.
One thing that may be just a local thing, but our election worker infrastructure around here is ‘oversubscribed’. That is, they got a lot of new volunteers last year both to anticipate a high turnout election and to fill in for the usual cadre of older folks that wanted to sit that round out due to (justified) Covid health worries.
But now, everyone is more or less back, and off year elections, with lower turnout, don’t require as many people to staff. So right now, there’s probably 2-3 times the number of people that have signed up to work elections than there are workers needed.
This will probably get closer to ‘right-sized’ as we head into the 2024 cycle, but it’s something to keep in mind for people that listened to the podcast and want to jump in.Report
I enjoyed the discussion. I cracked up when Genya wondered why trust in mail in voting had fallen in FL, and Andy was totally at a loss for words for a few seconds. (She knew what was going on.)Report
She was deadpanning it, but it took me a second and I wasn’t sure if she was joking or not so I moved it along since I wasn’t sure. That one was on me, bad hosting. Will work on that.Report
NO! Don’t do that. It was great radio. It took me a second, too.Report
