Once upon a time the US Amateur championship was played on a course near where I lived, that I had played many times. I went out to watch and spent the day at one of the par four holes that gave me fits. The championship tees made the hole 40 yards longer than when I played it, but the top amateurs still just ate it up. They simply weren’t playing the same game that I played.Report
Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.
Apparently, Vardon broke records that still stand today.
This is 6 years after Vardon won his sixth, and last, Open Championship. 1920 would be the year that Ted Ray won the US Open.
Which would put this cartoon set squarely in Vardon’s twilight and Ray’s Afternoon.Report
