Sunday!
I grew up just outside of Detroit where we had the Detroit stations of 2, 4, 7, 20, and 50 and, also, we got the Windsor channel 9.
For the most part, Channel 9 didn’t really offer anything that we couldn’t get on any of the Detroit stations except for two things: Absolutely terrifying public service announcements. There was one that dealt with a very rare disease that gave you black eyes and sang the song “jeepers creepers where’d you get those peepers” and there was another one that talked about a horrible disease that made you feel like your intestines were being tied in knots and they gave you a handy dandy animated visual of intestines being tied in knots while a child was sitting on his bed rocking back and forth. So I was terrified that I’d have both happen to me. Thanks, Canada.
But one of the nice ones was the “House Hippo”.
Commercials aside, the *REAL* reason to watch Windor’s Channel 9 was Curling on Saturday afternoons.
This is a sport where people throw rocks on ice and people with brooms are sweeping in front of the rock and the guy who threw the rock screams stuff like “Hard! HARD! HAAAAARD!!!!” and then the rocks at the end of the ice hit each other all willy-nilly.
Then, come Monday morning, we’d all discuss curling while outside at recess. One person would roll a ball and several people would pretend to sweep in front of it as it rolled.
The good thing about the Winter Olympics is that a little piece of that magic can be brought back. Mixed doubles for Curling seems to be Tuesday the 13th, Men’s on the 23rd and Women’s on the 24th.
So… what are you reading and/or watching?
You don’t live that far from an opportunity to take part in the sport. They’re currently looking for one or more volunteers to help them set up video streaming.Report
Any sport that you can play with a lit cigarette in your hand is my kinda sport.
Well, back when I smoked and when they let people smoke inside, anyway.
Since then, some of the magic has left.Report
Your comment on comments here got me to thinking about MacIntyre’s Three Rival Versions of Moral Enquiry.… so I re-read that, and doing so uncovered something I hadn’t sufficiently pondered before:
So now I’m (re-)reading Dante… which my Daughter is also reading for school – hopefully I can keep up.
And playing the new Civ6 upgrade (because I’m foolish and gullible).Report
Also in Detroit: channel 56 (PBS) and 62 (notable for never quite coming in clearly).Report
C and I are almost caught up on the Librarians for the season.
It’s really a fabulous show.Report
@maribou
Season 4 just started here yesterday, it is a fun show.Report
Reading my own source code. I’ve been futzing with the cartogram software for a bit over five years now. I’m thinking about open-sourcing it, but am torn about its requiring a full Perl environment to run.Report
