  1. The “Tuskegee” link goes to a story about the importance of gay bars to the gay community. Is that intentional?Report

      1. The Yugoslav Breakup wars (original flavor) started in 1991 with the secession of Slovenia, and lasted through 1995 and the Dayton Accords.

The Kosovo War was all within Clinton the First’s presidency: 1998-99,

After, that you still have the Presevo Valley Insurgency (1999-2001) and the 2001 Albanian-Macedonian insurgency (the latter, for once, not involving Serbia)

The very forgotten War in Ukraine is still going, so I guess whatever was the last battle there is the last battle in European soil. It’s a feather in NPR’s cap that it is the only mainline news source I see that remembers that there is a war going in there, once in a blue moon.Report

  2. Dead cops in Baton Rouge and I am so full of rage and emptiness. We have kinfolk within blocks of the barricades. Anger, anger everywhere and not a brain in sight. I am starting to think that this year might end up being worse than 68. I will now quit ranting and spend time hoping for the best.Report

    1. There seem to be almost no facts available; at least one witness reports that the shooting started before the police arrived. But of course it’s being reported as a cop-killing like the one in Dallas.Report

  3. “I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the Savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses,” she said.Report

  4. RE: Civil Rights Act. What’s also fun is to look at the history of Prohibition and realize that A: women’s suffrage was supported by Prohibitionists because the women who wanted to vote made it absolutely clear that they wanted to vote to make alcohol illegal, and B: the biggest organised political group to support suffrage was the KKK, because they thought that strong drink encouraged black people to become violent.

So, by modern reasoning, if you think that women’s suffrage was a good thing, then you also support the War On Drugs and the KKK.Report
