Weekend!
Whilst running errands with Maribou last night, we happened to drive past a new little pizza place in the middle of a pizza desert. Pie 5.
My first comment was something to the effect of “MAN IT IS SO UNFAIR THAT THEY WAITED UNTIL I WAS ON MY DIET TO OPEN” or something to that effect. It could have been just vowels. Maribou saved the day by pointing out that her birthday was just around the corner and, seriously, this could be our birthday cheat meal.
This was the most wonderful idea that I have ever heard.
So we walk in and it’s exactly like Chipotle/Qdoba/Garbanzo’s and any other fast-casual place. A cheerful tattooed person with giant ear gauges asks what kind of crust we want, what kind of sauce, what kind of cheese, what kind of toppings, and we build our pizza by pointing at the various toppings and then they put the pie in the giant centerpiece of the store: the little pizza oven about the size of a Toyota Yaris. They put the pie in the one end, then pass you off to the next person whose job it is to figure out what you want on your salad and/or breadsticks and/or slice of cookie-pie. Then you get down to the register and pay and, by the time the transaction is done, they start telling you that your pizza will be there in just a minute and then you can put the fresh chopped basil(!) on the pizza or the parm or the pepper.
The downside: we got out of there spending about $30. Not unthinkable for dinner but there’s a part of me that thinks “$30 for fast casual?” and mumbles something about eating and getting a glass of wine for that much money.
That said: the pizza was really, really good. The salad was fresh. The cookie may not have been good but it was a cheat meal cookie so it melted in my mouth and gave me a shot of endorphins anyway.
What I find most interesting about the whole experience is the little dinky car-sized pizza oven. The thing that makes or breaks fast casual is the fact that you’re getting a sit-down quality meal in about 5 minutes, start to finish. The only way to make a sit-down quality pizza in five minutes? It requires a technical marvel.
And we have achieved it.
What a time to be alive.
Anyway, this weekend the weather people tell me will be… snowy? But it was 70 degrees today! Well, earlier, people were gossiping about how Denver was going to get 40 inches. Wunderground says only about half a foot.
WHICH MEANS THAT THIS IS THE BIG ONE, PEOPLE
So, tomorrow night, we’ve got to hit the grocery stores and the drug store and, yes, the wine store and dig in for a wild weekend.
To be followed by a workweek where it’s in the 70’s again.
So… what’s on your docket?

I lived in Boulder for about ten years and the heaviest snow storm I remember started on the 29 of March and snowed over two feet. We were snowed in for about four days. One time in early June I was working right next to the mountains and all afternoon we watched this dark cloud float in from the north and we wondered when it would start raining. Well it did start raining, but before we could get the tools up it was snowing hard. There was about four inches on the ground before it quit. The snow did not last long but it was something to talk about.
This weekend is earth day and they have bands. The one we want to see is Geno Delafose and French Rockin Boogie. Hooray for zydeco.Report
Batching it while the wife is on a vegan/yoga/no talking retreat. Of which I have gotten a series of texts that the food sucks, the people are weird/culty but the yoga was good.
So I drank a half a six pack while working in the garage refinishing a rolltop desk.
Thats about it.Report
Dude, I’m making a delivery in Denver in the morning. Hope I can get out of town before the snow hits. You have no idea how sick I am of snow. This has been a long, ugly winter for drivers.Report
Be safe, and good luck.Report
The current NWS forecast suggests that you’ll be okay if you can get far enough east early enough in the day.
People must think it’s the end of the world — the grocery was a zoo this AM.
Mountain forecast is for two to four feet of the stuff. Southern Californians ought to be hoping that a bunch of that falls on the west side of the Divide — this one may be the difference between weather Lake Mead hits the emergency level at the end of the year or not.Report
All the el nino went to Alaska this year. Bad news for cali.Report
Not quite just Alaska. Denver Water’s reservoir system is 87% full, well above average for the date. Snow pack in both drainages that feed the system is above average. This will be another year where DW will let water they own go downstream because they lack space to store it. Could be a good year to schedule your white water river vacation here.
Or maybe it’s not El Niño; most of the climate change models predict that the northern Colorado mountains will have wetter winters and springs than previously.Report

Apparently Conde Nast Traveler reckons I live in one of the world’s great cities for the eating of pizza (they’re certainly right that Tony’s Pizza Palace is fantastic).
Friends visiting tonight – I’m not exactly sure how much we’ll see of them, as they’ve got a long drive here and a workshop in the morning.
Fledermaus being away, and yet with Fledermaus as the driving force, we’re looking at a house on Saturday. I thought we bought a house so we wouldn’t have to go house shopping anymore. House shopping can lead to packing, and moving, and trying to figure out whether to sell in a down market or become a landlord, and all manner of things that terrify me.Report
4 day weekend for mah birthday. Got some stuff to accomplish but mostly I wanna read and hang out with the cats. Gaming will be fun if it’s safe to drive across town.Report
It’s finally spring! So I’m going cycling and shopping on Saturday. Will probably go see The Jungle Book too, since it’s getting great reviews.
And I’ve decided that I’m going to Chicago for Victoria Day weekend! (Memorial Day weekend to you guys.) It’s gonna be awesome.Report
