Weekend!
There was a meme floating around a while back that was pretty funny.
As an introvert, this resonates with me. I find myself in a strange place, though, where I am one of those introverts who has started doing something with groups of people EVERY WEEKEND and I find myself asking “how did this happen?”
To the best of my knowledge, I haven’t been adopted recently.
I mean, when it comes to human interaction, it’s nice to go out to dinner with Maribou and/or see a movie with her (or a different movie at or around the same time that she’s seeing on in an adjacent theater). Perhaps going with her to run some errands and turn walking up and down the aisles into a date in its own right by discussing exactly how many different colored pens in a Costco colored pen set is too many different colors. After that, though, my idea of a good day is one spent in a dark room and getting up every hour or so to switch loads of laundry over and then, when the last load of laundry is done, going back to spend time in the dark room without getting up at all. Maybe to pee.
And so it is with saying that that, once again, I’m doing stuff this weekend with groups of people. Friday Night is a Work Morale Event. We’re doing a quarterly celebration of the birthdays with an Official VR night. Last weekend was just the dress rehearsal. This weekend is The Real Thing. We’re going to be playing Star Trek Bridge Commander, Job Simulator, and we’re going to do Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes.
This last one is an asymmetrical party game where one person has a bomb in front of them and everybody else has the manual. It’s the job of the people with the manual to walk the person in the headset through disarming the bomb. Succeed and you don’t blow up.
(We’ll also have a second rig in the corner for people who just want to play quietly and maybe experience stuff like Skyrim or The Blu without the raucous jumping up and down or spinning around or yelling that those other games entail.)
And then Saturday is the gaming night and we’re going to be playing our Superheroes.
And then Sunday is a little AA baseball game down at the stadium.
And through it all, we’re going to have to do all of the little things like going to the pet store or Costco or King Soopers for the weeklies.
That means that laundry will consist of starting something, then leaving. Coming home after the doing something, then swapping loads over. Perhaps Sunday night will hold some time spent sitting in a darkened room.
So… what’s on your docket?

It’s Wonders of Wildflowers Weekend, and it’s at a place that’s “only” an hour from me, so I signed up. At least for Saturday, I did.
I hope it’s good. I hope I have some positive human interactions. This has been a not-great week, no real big things but lots of being busy and just lots of awful ominous things in the news, me being tired because it’s the end of the semester, and because I’m going to be involved all day Saturday I have had to take care of the usual Saturday things (laundry, housecleaning, wal-mart run) during the week. I really don’t recommend Wal-Mart at 5 pm on a Thursday. I often walk out of there thinking “I hate humanity now” but this week was particularly bad.
Next weekend I have a training thing for a Board I’m serving on, so next Saturday will be kind of not-fun. At least after that is Exam Week and then I get a bit of free time after that.Report

So true… I can get a solid two hours of fun out of a grocery store trip if the wife is willing to indulge me and check out all the new food items that seem to appear each week.Report
Oh my gosh, does everything in my body hurt today. (But I got approved for some much-needed medical leave to try some in-depth treatment of my woes, this summer, so hope is in sight.)
I am not attending the VR thing because I’m throwing a game night (analog, old skool) for my department at the behest of some of my graduating seniors, instead.
Otherwise the same plans as Jaybird, as usual. If this pain proves transient, I might even be up for Costco philosophizing.Report
There are dance workshops and dancing on Friday and Saturday this weekend. The Bay Area Book fair is on Sunday.Report
Going to see Infinity War tonight.
I. Cannot. Wait. Even wore my Captain America shirt to work today.
Superhero gaming with Mr. Bird and Mrs. Bou Saturday night, and joining the same for the baseball game on Sunday.
Jay, it occurs to me that we could realistically squeeze in a climbing day Sunday afternoon-ish…Report
@fish @jaybird No, dudes, no afternoon climbing – the game on Sunday is at 1 pm.Report
Yep, you’re right. I was looking at Saturday.Report
Aloha from Lanai, HI. Won/earned/lucked into an all (well, most) expenses paid vacation from work. Seeing how the .01% live…hoping the revolution doesn’t start until Monday when we are back on the farm of plausible deniability.Report
I sincerely hope that I contributed to your current lifestyle of having weekends packed with fun. After all, I kept bugging you and the ‘bou to play RPGs then both of you got hooked and it snowballed from there. Even after my ongoing sojourn to the Garden State, I am pleased you continue this pursuit and hope somehow in the back of your mind it makes you remember me. Hopefully fondly, rather than the overly dramatic thirty year old with the personality of a teenager who happened to earn Quite A Lot Of Money.
I love you guys and hope to see you soon.Report
Absolutely.
Without a doubt.Report
My weekend will be spent writing for The Anomalist, completing my astronomy club’s newsletter, then seeing Labyrinth in a cinema with my current spouse. I might write for myself or try to take up the avocation of reading books again. Or kick my Duolingo Esperanto lessons into high gear again.Report
