Weekend!
Okay. The holidays are now pretty much over.
That’s enough of that.
Now we have to do the stuff that we couldn’t do because it was the holidays. Time to tentatively go out to Costco again but only get the stuff like paper towels and that really good unfiltered olive oil without swimming through the crowds of people going through the meat section with a 70″ television on their cart.
We can go to Trader Joe’s without knocking over a display of Advent Calendars for grown-ups or the 17 different kinds of peppermint-themed artisanal sweets.
We can go to the King Soopers and buy the yogurt and milk and shredded cheese and fruits and marinades and maybe check out the 50% off Christmas candy and then be irritated about how the Valentine’s Day candy is prominently displayed already.
And then to have a normal weekend where nothing “special” needs to happen. Sure, we’ll have gaming on Saturday night but that’s a pleasant evening with friends, not something where everybody has to trade gift cards.
But that also means that New Year’s Resolutions kicked in this week as well. And, sure, we’ve all got the “I resolve to not make any resolutions” resolution down, but in addition to that one, I’ve started climbing at City Rock again and found that I’ve forgotten more or less everything I knew about climbing the baby walls that I used to be good at climbing and have to start back over at zero. Also, my knees told me “you should have been running for the week prior to this” as I did my first real attempt at a wall that had been modified since the last time I was there.
So my resolution is the same one that I had two or three months ago: work out, climb at the climbing gym, lose weight, lower blood pressure, the usual. But this time I mean it! And we’ll start running again as soon as the weather permits.
In the meantime, we’ll just get better at climbing in general and make our knees get used to climbing without running every day.
So… what’s on your docket?

I need to lose about ten pounds, too, or whatever it takes to shrink a waist by two inches. I’m starting to get crap from Chinese girls. They’re the canaries of weight gain.Report
Its supposed to be super cold on Saturday and Sunday in NYC so I’m probably going outside on Saturday. Sunday I have to go into the office because we were closed yesterday.Report
I guess you could say I resolved to get my blue belt, but, I really don’t get input since you have to be invited to test, but the Instructor did say to three of us, all 4 stripe white belts “time to get serious”.:
Drill Drill Drill
Take privates
Lose weight/build cardio
Repeat 1, 2, 3 as necessary until invitation to test. Don’t puke on the mat during testing.
Bonus…playing 5E D&D this weekend. Been like, 30 years since I last played.Report
5th Edition does this trick where it *FEELS* like 2nd edition (with a handful of bells and whistles) until somewhere around 5th level. And *THEN* its start to feel like this completely new system.
(And given that most characters never make it past 2nd, that’s a pretty neat trick.)Report
Yeah, just enough similarity and new stuff to be utterly confusing, but I did have a blast. GF was pissed but….whatev…..
Almost 3rd level now…see what happens at 5th.Report
Cashing in the lady-friend’s Christmas gift: staying at a historic hotel in Manhattan, doing the Downton Abbey exhibit thingy, dinner and drinks at a Victorian-themed bar, freezing our asses off… shoukd be fun!Report
That sounds super fun! Stay warm!Report
I’ve got to get serious about packing away all of the emotions and hormonal baggage from the relationship I have with my surrogate son’s father so I can look at finding a new family to carry for in 2018. I’m going to starting weaning from breastfeeding tomorrow… or Monday… or next week… This is a difficult resolution!
Today I go visit my best friend’s new baby born over Christmas break. Not helping my baby fever. Sure, I need to do all of those usual weekend chores, but BABIES!!! I don’t even particularly like kids, I’m just high on hormones.Report
Oh jeez, that’s both really rough and really great that you’re going to be doing it again!
You’re helping a lot of folks and, jeez, the emotional labor seems astronomical.
It seems weird or dumb to say “thank you” or “good job” but, seriously, that seems both really rough and really great that you’re willing to do it again.Report
Thanks, JB. It is rough and great. It’s a relief to hear you say it and to be able to acknowledge the duality myself.Report
Re-did and re-sent my passport application from scratch, after it got rejected for insufficiently perfect photos last time. (The Canadian govt is way pickier than the US govt about this.)
That was such a stressful thing, for 99 percent symbolic reasons, that I’m really not expecting much of anything else from myself. Gaming tonight which is a lark.
Goin’ to PItch Perfect III with Fish on Sunday if we can figure out the timing.
Probably I’ll put the laundry away at some point. And go to the library to pick up my holds.
But we’re in the land of low expectations for the rest of the weekend, ’round here.Report
