A follow-up on the Botham Jean/Amber Guyger story that flew under the radar
From DFW’s CBS:
DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Chief Judge Barbara Lynn of the Northern District of Texas has reversed a previous ruling of the Court that had dismissed all claims against the City of Dallas in the murder of Botham Jean.
The federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Dallas is now allowed to proceed once an amended lawsuit is filed.
We discussed Amber Guyger getting indicted here.
We discussed her trial here.

I didn’t see the story where the lawsuit against Dallas was dismissed.
I’m glad that another judge reversed that decision.Report
Well, I guess I haven’t followed this enough to understand how Guyger’s police training might have been a factor. I mean, she wasn’t on duty at the time, right?Report
She was not, but she was getting off after a long shift.
At that point, there are legit questions as to what her bosses might have done to prevent this in the first place. Hey, maybe there’s nothing.
I doubt we’ll find out, though. This was the “please don’t make us settle out of court” lawsuit that got overturned. Now the cops have the choice between “Discovery” and “Settle”.
I imagine that the latter will do less damage to them.Report
The key factor here is that the taxpayers of Dallas collectively have much deeper pockets than Amber Guyger. Pedestrian notions of causality and culpability are of secondary concern.Report
