Very obviously relatively recent immigrants and clearly having a good chuckle- I like the dynamic.Report
Another example of a person in a humble calling, proud of his work, who seems to live at a decent level of material comfort. Was it really like that then?Report
Obviously not. This cartoon is a Gone With The Wind-esque whitewashing of the past that was an obvious attempt to make the ruling White classes feel better about their oppression of POCs.Report
I know Italians were never considered REALLY white in those days, but they were never regarded as people of color.Report
Well, in this one specifically all it’s showing is they have a (maybe?) stay at home wife, a jacket, a chair and an apartment or home. For a city dweller that isn’t unreasonable. I agree that some of the previous portrayals seemed to show people like milk men appearing in pretty toff settings.Report
Working title: “Jar-Jar Binks At Home”.Report
I’m with CJ, I believe the artist is portraying a recent Italian immigrant speaking their recently learned English. Of course in reality when he came home he’d simply speak Italian with his wife.Report
