Gawker Addendum
Up top, Ethan has some great commentary on Gawker’s Leah Finnegan’s criticism of Vox. The post solidly stands on it’s own (Ethan’s, that is), but I would feel remiss if I didn’t throw in this link on Off The Cuff to a Daily Show piece that includes an interview with former Gawker editor Neetzan Zimmerman explaining what real journalism — and the Gawker model — is all about.
Apologies to those that don’t have access to video streaming, but this is really one of those things you have to watch to fully appreciate.
But I will at least say this: Apparently the Gawker-model of quality journalism relies heavily on “side-boob.”
Heh-heh
You said boob.
Completely unrelated (but funny).Report
Family guy:
Look at that side boob
and that side boob
that’s some nice side boob

So so happy to see this clip here at OT.
Said Zimmerman,”It’s not important if a story is real, the only thing that matters is if people click on it.”
Now I’m curious. I wonder what Gawker’s current managing editor has to say, if anything.Report
Well I always kinda hope the terrible things Valleywag says about my employer are false! 🙂Report
While I don’t begrudge anyone this way of doing business (well, maybe I do, but supposing I don’t), the thing that gets me is when the people at these sites refuse to cop to the model they’ve embraced.
By all means let people clicking on dancing animals and celebrity gossip go toward funding more in-depth reportage or thoughtful essays, but let’s not pretend that these are Very Serious endeavors focused delivering righteous indignation for its own sake.
The video of the journalist’s execution but IS Gawker chose to post makes this clear.Report
