On “Safety, at what price?

Easy to get? Good to know. Guess we can shut down that whole Community Reinvestment Act then.

"

duwha?
Only if they have debt, and haven't we been talking about how the poor have a hard time getting a loan (ie debt)?

No, maintain the buying power of the currency so that the poor are not paid monetary units that are worth less and less over time and the price of their needed items (food, etc.) continues to rise due to the increasingly worthlessness of the currency.

"

Want to help poor people? Stop devaluing the currency.

"

And all that extra engineering and cost has kept MPG very close to what it was decades ago and increased the price significantly. I got 42 MPG on my 85 Honda Civic SI. How many cars get that now with all the airbags and backup cameras, and lane drift warnings? So we spend all this money and time and we're still no better off MPG-wise.

On “Timing, Part 2

My DMV has furlough days. Try getting anything done on that day, and has fewer "full service" centers vs "license renewal" locations-and you can't get your renewal by mail except once a decade.

Try explaining to the "emission testing guy" that YOU HAVE TO PUT THE GAS CAP BACK ON SECURELY before you check the emissions computer or you get a failure.

Try explaining to the "emission testing guy" how to drive a stick shift.

On “It’s actually not pronounced mänster

I didn't like Kelly, but I'll give him a small amout of props if he, as suggested by the links, was rebutting Krugman. We need more writers taking on that idiot.

On “Safety, at what price?

Didn't read all the comments as there were so many, but I doubt this was covered: the unintended consecquences of other regulation on saftey. Example: First generation airbags.

Let's take automobile fuel efficiency. There are only a few ways to improve the MPG on a car: smaller engine, lighter weight, etc. If you're pulling out mass in a car to reduce weight, it has less ability to protect the occupants.

On “Here I Am

But we've already determined that sucession is illegal, so it just can't be done!

*wrings hands*

On “How Dumb Can You Be?

I forget which comedian said it, but "you can't fix stupid" and it’s apt.

I remember hearing about his via snops.com a few years ago and, although my basic chemistry in high school was 30ish years ago, i still could noodle out that "di" is 2 and "mono" is 1. After that it was easy to figure out that this was all a joke.

Here's a thought: let's make answering the question correctly "explain what dihydrogen monoxide is" a voting test. If you fail, you're obviously not qualified to select the leader of the free world, or to be on a jury.

On “Thursday Night Bar Fight #7: All Hail the Chief!

Can I just nominate all the French peasants from the Revolution? They'd work on both sides. They will leave the country in a bit of a mess, but it's nothing we couldn't fix and I don't think we'd end up with a Emperor.

On “Yet Another Problem With NCAA Athletics

All this goes to the point that "college athletics" are, for the popular sports, nothing but farm teams for the pros. They ought to be abandoned or made legit farm teams.

I've had some personal experience with insane NCAA rules and they, and the "sports programs" at colleges are nothing but businesses. That fact that they, in effect, make indentured servants of the athletes while raking in all the money, is disgusting.

On “Why Not Demanding GMO Labeling is Udder Foolishness… (Get it? It’s a pun!)

I'm a big fan of disclosure, in most all things, especially food.

I want to know if a food product is made with GMO, and how exactly the food was modified. I'm ok with all the details not being on the label but it should be available for my review-allowances for proprietary info withholding, etc.

BUT no one has a RIGHT to know what's in their food and no company has a RIGHT to not disclose it, and by "right" I mean "this isn't labeled so I can sue you and win damages." I'm content to let the market place pressure companies to disclose this info in a REGULATORY NEUTRAL framework. Let the activist test products they think might be GMO and call out companies’ misbehavior. Let consumers agitate to the companies for more details on the label, or boycott the products if companies refuse.

On “The GOP’s Self-inflicted Wound

You're damn close to knowing my real age then :)

On “The GOP’s Self-inflicted Wound

I stopped paying attention and caring about the Republicans when the Republicans spend more money than the Democrats when they were last in power. They helped make the mess we're in and deserve 50% of the blame. The Democrats get the rest. It was at that time I realized that the Repubs were just as statist as the Demos.

The only way they are going to get any traction is to get off this social agenda and get back to fiscal reform-but I'm not holding my breath.

On “Israel, Palestine, and Cosmopolitan

No one's interested in actually getting anything done. Meanwhile, the more orthodox believers (jews and muslims) produce more and more children, effectively breeding out the moderates.

It's going to get real interesting in the next few decades. There really won't be any solution to this problem until one side gives up or gets obliterated.

On “9 Things Progressives Are NOT

That's a laugh. I live in one of the bluest states, machine run. There is no hope of changing that. It it democracy? Perhaps you call it that. I call it "nanny state mob rule".

Participation in the process? Why? I've got Republicans tell me I should vote for them because they voted FOR a tax increase because it brought a road improvement. When the "opposition" is just as hard core statist you're screwed.

"

No, I disapprove of a group of other people getting together and "solving" a problem without 1) my input, 2) my consent and then forcing me to comply by passing legislation.

"

Correct. This is why I use the term "statist" for those on both sides of the conventional political spectrum, because they are, in fact, in favor of this. Everything else is simply arguments around the various aspects of it.

"

Curious as to why you didn't identify a "spectrum" or "distribution" in the Fascist and Marxist categories like you did with Scientific Wonks. Maybe it's a matter of interpretation, because I surely see elements of Fascism and Marxism in current Progressives.

They all share similar propensities for state/nation action to fix societal problems and are more than happy to embrace ownership/ties to govt and allegedly private companies.

On “DRS was kind enough to dig up the links….

"...but it’s quite clear that there’s a substantial and vocal minority of “people” (using this term loosely, I assume these sociopaths are still genetically homo sapiens-sapiens) who feel the need to turn this into a righteous crusade to fight for the poor white oppressed male who is smothered by the PC police and feminazis."

And you find the same type of people doing similiar things on the other side of the "discussion". All because a woman chose not to confront the issue but tweet about it. Like taking something to the interwebs like this WAS EVER a good idea.

On “A risk manager’s quick observation of the Adria Richards hubbub

I enjoyed this recent internet dust up. Assholes get called about by another asshole and firings ensue. Epic.

I also read Adria's blog post about this. 100% justification for her actions after the fact with no thinking about whether or not this was the best action she could have taken. She had the cojones to take a pic and tweet a comment, but not to call these guys out when she was right next to them? That's standing up for what you believe!

On “Libertarians Are Not Like Beryllium

I'm quite self satisfied with my "libertarian heartlessness". *smirk*

On “Progress

Arguments fix nothing. They may clarify each person's side, but they actually don't result in progress.

"

I've learned that there is intelligent, rational, reasonable people on the other two sides that think critically, and that the those sides are not entirely composed of mouth breathing, jargon slinging fools that ape the TV commentators.

This has me mildly pleased. Now if you all would just agree with me we could fix some things.
