On “Weekend!

I am inspired Patrick. My son has outgrown the Trick or Treating, so I may try to do something cool at the house next year.

"

Tomorrow I am going to head to my parents' house and go through accumulated stuff of mine that I have never taken with me. I will sort it into stuff to move with me, stuff to leave with them, and stuff to get rid of. I have to figure out what I want to do with things like my old Star Wars figures from the 80s and my comics from the 90s. Do I want to continue to hoard them? Do I want to try to sell them? It is a little easier, since I do not have to worry about packing, but I still do not want to bring along too much excess crap that is just going to sit, unused, in a closet.

Sunday evening my son and I fly out to Houston for next week's house hunting trip. Hopefully we will come back with a place to live.

@Damon I see how I misread your statement now.

And the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah is actually the John Cale version.

I have to disagree with bullet point 1

What is your disagreement? I do not remember anything happening later to contradict that.

(I don’t think we learned anything about Mollari that we didn’t already know).

What do you mean? We learned that the Great Maker is the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and Mollari's noodly appendage is proof the Centauri are made in its image.

Reading: about 2/3 of the way through Book 4 of The Wheel of Time. I also started reading Mike Carey's Lucifer, and I am working through the 2nd volume.

Watching: the Ricky Gervais comedy Derek is in Netflix, so I decided to check it out. It is a good show, though not as non-stop funny as The Office. It is set in a nursing home. The main characters are losers and outcasts of various types. Ricky's character is very odd, possibly autistic. The one thing that I really like about this show is that it is "nice." Many comedies are mean-spirited, and that is where much of the humor comes from. Derek is a bit more sentimental and sweet, which is a good change.

Also, last night's Hell in a Cell was firmly in the "meh" category.

This weekend, my son talked me into taking advantage of a buy 2 get 1 free sale at Gamestop. I got myself a copy of Darksiders II. It is a combination of the wall running of Prince of Persia, combat of God of War, and dungeons from Legend of Zelda. I have only put in a couple hours, but so far, so good. I will have to see how it holds up at higher levels. If I can learn to stop trying to use the right analog stick to dodge roll, I will be in good shape.

I am also most of the way through Nightmare level of Diablo 3. I do not know if I will stick around through Hell and Inferno, now that I have started another game to distract me.

I think you are right about the difficulty in changing profiles. The game is also available on PC. For the original Rocksmith, there were latency issues on the PS3. This was worse when using an HDMI cable. The best solution was supposed to be using external speakers, though I did not have external speakers to use.

I ended up getting a PC copy. The latency was reduced to a more tolerable level. It is also easy to change profiles.

I enjoyed it well enough, but I realized I did not want to be a rock guitarist. I prefer country blues finger style, and related styles, so the software does not get much use.

Which would be be more humiliating? Having the score run up, or having the winning team absolutely quit trying?

I have a kid. I still have no idea how to act around other people's kids. I somehow managed to do alright with mine, but I get super awkward when interacting with others.

Then again, I get super awkward when interacting with adults as well.

Finished S1 of The Wire, through some marathon watching over the weekend. Such an entirely, and intentionally, unsatisfying season finale. Abguvat punatrf.

I also watched GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. I am fairly certain I saw an episode or two of GLOW as a kid, but my dad was not an avid follower. I do not remember it in much detail. The documentary paints an interesting picture, and it does not seem overly sensationalized.

I agree Tod, especially considering other things I have heard from him. He does not strike me as particularly libertarian. Firefly does appeal to libertarian sentiments, but I do not think it was an attempt to promote the philosophy.

Nothing new this weekend. Actually, not a lot of time on video games. I little more DDO, a little more Dominions 4, and a little more D3.

I really look forward to getting into Dom 4 multiplayer, which is where the series really shines, but it can be a bit of a time commitment to get turns in on time. A turn can easily take a good 30 minutes or more in the mid- and late- game. I decided it would be best to wait until I get settled in the new place next year.

Tomorrow I am taking my son's trumpet to be repaired and to buy him a larger mouthpiece. Then, we are hitting a Chinese buffet for lunch (his request). After that, grocery shopping.

We also need to get a birthday card and a gift card for his friend who is a girl (though not a girlfriend), because he is going to her birthday party tomorrow night. Because it is October, the birthday party is going to be a costume party. He is going as one of the gas mask people from the Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child." A show that he showed no interest in when I was watching it, but because the girl who is his friend likes it, it is now the greatest show ever. The joys of middle school crushes.

"

I have always been a bit irked with "I'm blessed" or "have a blessed day." It just strikes me as an obnoxious bit of signaling, and when it is done as such a routine thing, it loses its meaning. It is kind of like how, when most people ask "how are you?" they are not really asking the question. It is just the greeting ritual.

It's like the sort of thing you would find in "To Serve Man."

I got my son from my first wife, but that it somewhat of a cliche answer.

The fact of the matter is, I have been shaped by all of my relationships. If not for them, I am confident that I would not be in the exact situation I am in now, and I am very happy with my current situation. It is possible I would be in a better situation, but I could also be somewhere worse. I have no way to know.

I have learned things to avoid in relationships. I have learned about my own personality traits from those bad relationships.

Also, all of those relationships had their good moments, or they never would have gotten started. There were fun moments, quite moments, emotional moments.

I might wish they had gone differently in the end, but I am grateful for every one of them.

Regarding the cracked windshield, many states require insurance companies to cover the repair of a cracked windshield. Of course, this sometimes leads to situations where the only way the shops can compete is to offer incentives like free steaks with a repair, since there is no longer any price competition.

I think it is very important to know what are things you are unwilling to live without; what things you would prefer, but that are not deal breakers; and what things you really do not care about. If something is a deal breaker, it is good to find out the potential partner's stance on it very early. Otherwise, you are just wasting one another's time.

That does not only apply to sexual compatibility.

On “Babylonia!

One of the interesting things about this show is that it was largely planned in advance, which allowed them to have prophecies and visions from the future that (generally) come true. Typically, when a show deals with prophecy, it is either extremely vague and constantly reinterpreted, such as Angel's Shanshu Prophecy, or else it is resolved in a single season. With B5, things typically get a proper payoff, even if it comes a few seasons later.
