  1. According to wikipedia, a mid-iron is a two-iron, a mashie is a 5-iron, and a niblick is a 9-iron. You could totally play a round with a driver, a 2, a 5, a 9, and a putter!

    Reminds me of a story–perhaps apocryphal–from high school. Allegedly, his Dad beat him over 9 holes at our tiny little muni with nothing but a putter.Report

    1. Don’t know about just a putter, but my high school golf team would occasionally play a practice round where you could only use a 5-iron. You can do all kinds of interesting things with a 5-iron if you adjust your grip, stance, and swing. It also makes you think very differently about how to play a particular hole, a skill that most golfers never bother with.Report
