Saturday Morning Gaming: Gloomhaven is this week’s Free Game from the Epic Game Store
We’ve talked about Gloomhaven a bunch of times before but, if you’ve missed it, you should know the following:
Gloomhaven was originally a gimungous board game. A 20 pound board game. It had lots of heroes, gobs of monsters, heaps of cards, loads of counters, masses of maps, and oodles of surprises.
Well, we happened to get our hands on a copy of it at the beginning of 2019. In September of 2019, it got announced that it was going to have a *COMPUTER* game. Which is good because we managed to play it about 4 or 5 times by that point and we had a list of things that made getting together more often than that a problem. For one, HOLY COW THERE ARE SO MANY MOVING PARTS. Jeez louise. It had gobs of monsters! And heaps of cards! And masses of maps! Seriously, it took 15 minutes just to set up the game for the night’s session.
So a computer game that does this stuff automatically? So you can jump right into playing it? Heck yeah!
Well, in October of 2021, it finally came out. And, oh my gosh, I *LOVED* it.
I even put together a youtube with a brief tutorial on how to play it:
Man, it’s a great game.
AND NOW, FOR A LIMITED TIME, YOU CAN GET IT FOR FREE! THAT’S RIGHT! FOR FREE!!!
It is the Epic Game Store’s free game this week. And that’s not “you can play it for free for a week”, it’s “this week you can get it and put it in your library because now you own it despite not paying a cent for it”.
“Aw, man. Does that mean you have to sign up with the Epic Game Store to get it?”
Well… yeah. But it’s pretty easy. You can sign up with email, you can sign up with facebook, you can sign up with apple, you can sign up with google. You can sign up with your Xbox Live, or Playstation Network, or Nintendo, or Steam account.
Just go here and register and then download Gloomhaven and then play it. It’s a treat for any lover of turn-based board games. It’s a treat for any lover of strategy. It’s a treat for people who just like playing with toys and cards and exploring mechanics.
And it’s free.
So… what are you playing?
Thanks for the tip, I picked this game up.
Played a few hours last evening (staying up too late) and boy is it fun, but difficult! I’m struggling on easy with a party of four, but am slowly learning.
What a great game!Report
I’m pleased that you like it!
There are a lot of games that, collectively, have trained us to think that “easy” should mean “cakewalk” and you will be able to beat the map with most of your hitpoints and most of your cards.
Lemme tell ya, I have beaten several maps on easy with half my party exhausted and a couple of maps on with my last attack with my last pair of cards.Report

Slay the Spire is coming to tabletop. https://contentiongames.com/games/slay/
It might be worth keeping an eye on, though I wouldn’t expect to see it until late next year at the earliest.Report
Holy cow, I did not know this!
Hrm. 1-4 players (I was hoping for 6).
I will definitely check it out, though.Report
