Sunday!
One of the kiddos in our orbit is fixing to have a birthday and the kiddo is of the age where stories are read to her… over and over and over again.
So one of the gifts that makes sense to me is a picture book that is fun to read for the parents, fun to be read to for the kiddos, and the book has some vaguely useful information to slip through to the kid. I mean, if the book is likely to be read more than 50 times, it’s only fair that it have benefits for everybody involved.
So when everything aligns where I find such a book within a day of getting an invite to a birthday party? Score.
The book that happens to be serendipitous this time around is Nothing Rhymes with Orange, by Adam Rex.
It’s a book that comes up with a fun little song about fruits that rely strongly on rhyming. Share a plum with your chum. Have a banana in your cabana. The rhymes start getting sillier and sillier and there is a surprise in the middle of the book where the rhyme is “Peachy” and “Nietzsche”. As all this is going on, orange wanders about pointing out that the rhymes are getting sillier and sillier and, sigh, nothing rhymes with orange.
The culmination of the book is the other fruits figuring out how to include orange in their silly little song (and it’s charming… it’ll give you an opportunity to beep the nose of the kid you’d be reading the book to and tell them that they’re special too).
So if you’ve been looking for a children’s book that is both fun to read and to have read to you, you should check this one out.
So… what are you reading and/or watching?
And of course the fact that the father of the child in question has a degree in German, and will suffer greatly at the rhyming of Nietzsche with peachy, has noooooooooooooothing to do with it. *smirk*
It really is a charming book.
I bingewatched the first 3 episodes of season 7 of Game of Thrones last night. Then I made myself start watching a 12 hour course from the mayo clinic about pain relief instead. It’s very useful but not nearly as much fun.
I’ve nearly finished catching up on the Mashup Americans podcast. Think I’m only 3 eps behind atm. Then to figure out what to binge-listen next. Probably season 2 of the History Chicks. Mayyyyyybe something new like The Limit Does Not Exist or By the Book instead. Or maybe I’ll just say f’ it and listen randomly to random eps of a whole bunch of things until something sticks.
Doesn’t feel like I’ve been reading much. Tired. OTOH Goodreads tells me I’ve read 2 books a day all month so maybe the tired is just making me forget things, rather than not read.
Trans Like Me by CN Lester is great, and it starts with basics and then gets more and more complicated/personal, so it scales well…
Sergeant Reckless (by McCormick) is a picture book about a horse that served in Korea. It actually made me tear up a couple times. Stupid hormones. 😉Report

The kiddo in question is not quite yet two years old.
I imagine that knock knock joke mastery is a bit away.
Oh, my gosh. I don’t even know what entry-level knock knock jokes would be at this point!
