On ““The Ghost of Bobby Lee”

I'm sorry, I still see the question of slavery and the civil war as distinct. The South didn't wage war on the North to enforce slavery. They wanted to take their ball and go home. I think it's consistent to condemn slavery, the war, and the institutional changes that occurred as a result of the war.

On “Arizona passes the nation’s strictest – not to mention silliest – immigration law

@Rufus F., When I say smaller government, I only mean the Federal Gov. I'm also for a wall but I want it a bit further North. Mexicans aren't such a problem in the NW.... It's the Californians that drive us crazy.

On “Why porn is bad for you

@ Jaybird and on the other side we have preachers, politicians and management side lawyers. I have more respect for honest prostitutes.

On “Porn, again

I'm all for local control. But, to some extent we already have that. If these premises were true, the Bible Belt would be reaping the rewards of a more conservative society.

On “Why porn is bad for you

@Cascadian, Not much risk in that happening.

Up here even the politicians skinny dip. The reason I love Bob Rae: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZn9L5-Y5WI

"

@Jaybird, Skinny dipping would be completely out in that case. I believe that sex can be deeply meaningful. Where we differ is that I also think it can be wonderfully shallow. One doesn't negate the possibility of the other. Valuing the "meaningful" at the expense of play or exploration is as twisted in my books as someone who can't find the spiritual in sex.

"

@Jaybird, Are you talking about actors in general or just the skin variety? Is it only after penetration that worrying about camera angles matters?

"

@Michael Drew, Yes, it's protected speech. You questioned if someone would come out in support of the value of porn. I took a limited shot at that. I added that it was a bit of closing the gate behind the horse because the industry, what could be regulated, is dying a natural death.

"

@Michael Drew, I think commercial porn is a little better off than traditional journalism, but just. It's been a while but I think there's an aesthetic value (unrealistic as it might be) to Andrew Blake's work. But, for the most part, I think people are enjoying making their own more than watching some shoddy product coming out of the valley.

"

@Will, OK, so you have some friends that work at this place. Looking through the contributors to this little conference we have a guy from AEI, a co-author of the born alive infant protection act (also from NR), a member of the heritage foundation, and a Muslim fantic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R64dZDAQNAo&feature=related). Why would I think of this as anything as a foregone conclusion from an echo chamber as opposed to the results of an actual academic give and take with different points of view?

"

Um, when I think of realistic sexual information, NRO isn't the first place I'd turn. Both pieces sound like a sexual version of reefer madness. Show me something from The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality and I'll take it seriously.

On “In Praise of Finger-Wagging

I believe the technical term for physical play with no emotional attachment is "swinger".

"

@Matthew Schmitz, I would argue with the notion that "marriage" has an inherent content. The content of a Southern Baptist marriage from Georgia is going to differ from a Mormon from Utah, a Muslim from Kabul, Pagans in Portland, and just about any French couple.

"

@Jaybird, Amazing isn't it. What's best is when there's talking to be done, I don't always have to be the one.

"

@Jaybird, My relationships are 15 and 10 years old with little or no drama. To the extent that we know each other at all from this forum, you can add that to your tallies.

"

@Jaybird, Perhaps the four minute mile would be a better example.

On “The Next Step

The absolute worst thing about Canada is the amount of tax on beer.

"

I usually associate AA types with heavy chain smokers.

On “I Need a Good Story

Lol. So, I was walking past the Pump Jack....

I think sticking with the native cougar would be a better way to go. Go with the Joseph angle. This chick insisted I sleep with her and in the effort to get away....

On “Predictions about Healthcare

I'm with Koz on this one.

On “The Tea Party-Social Conservative Split

Pat Buchanan, Suzie Bright and Gary Snyder. How's that for a mix?

"

I suppose that makes me the bit of fluff at the edge of the fringe.

"

What are the differences between Paleo and Libertarian? Immigration, religion perhaps. Where else do they diverge?

On “Against education subsidies

One could argue that the private/charter program with scholarships for desirable disadvantaged students is superior to location based publics.

On “School choice is local, too

So, in theory you have no problem with an urban school district setting up a separate AP school and rural communities teaching to their priorities? Perhaps Agriculture would benefit one community more than physics.
