Olympic observations:

The men's Olympic skateboarders are dudes in their early to mid 20s. The women's Olympic skateboarders are barely teenage girls.

Also it is interesting that the sport is dominated by Japan seemingly. Japan won the gold in men and women's and the bronze in women's. Americans won silver and bronze in men's skateboarding and none in women's.

I have a bit of a hobby at looking at repeat phrases in political fundraising emails and texts and what they think politicians of various political parties think about their base. I've heard that these emails and texts are basically A/B tested to get the most skittish members to donate every time an email or text is sent.

Here are some common words and phrases I have seen used in Democratic politician emails and texts. These proport to be directly from the politician instead of a PAC.

1. Pummeled. I've seen this word used by numerous Democratic politicians in texts and emails. Often but not always by politicians in purplish states. Monies are needed, not because the politician is behind in the polls, but because the opposition is pouring tons of cash into the race and launching volley after volley of attack ad. I wonder if this is because Democrats like to see themselves as protecting/rooting for the underdog.

2. "Please let me explain, Saul." These emails and texts are usually sent at the end of the day and after receiving 6 or 7 previous emails. I suspect the subtext here is "Yes, we realize this is absurd to send 6 or 7 emails a day but....."

As others have noted before, one of the weirder things about the Biden must go saga was that the Progressive Wing of the Party, people like Sanders and AOC, stood by Biden while more moderate Democrats were the ones pushing for him to drop out of the race were known more for being moderates in the Party, relatively speaking. Some progressives are still angry about this: https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/why-did-progressive-democrats-support-joe-biden?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=dhfacebook&utm_content=null

The main beef in this essay appears to be Israel/Palestine which is weird to me because I don't think Harris' statements or actions on the issue have been substantially different from Biden's:

1. She strongly condemned the protest and graffiti yesterday in ways that echoed the Biden admin's stance of "Peaceful Protest is great! This does not give you license to vandalism, harassment, or reiterating slander from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion."

2. Her statement after meeting Netanyahu was basically what Biden has been saying for months now. Israel has a right to exist, has a right to defend itself, it can't go stomping over Palestinians to do so.

But people are twisting themselves into backflips to make it look like Harris' stance is different and new.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/25/us/politics/poll-kamala-harris-donald-trump.html

"Vice President Kamala Harris begins a 103-day sprint for the presidency in a virtual tie with former President Donald J. Trump, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College poll, as her fresh candidacy was quickly reuniting a Democratic Party that had been deeply fractured over President Biden.

Just days after the president abandoned his campaign under pressure from party leaders, the poll showed Democrats rallying behind Ms. Harris as the presumptive nominee, with only 14 percent saying they would prefer another option. An overwhelming 70 percent of Democratic voters said they wanted the party to speedily consolidate behind her rather than engage in a more competitive and drawn-out process.

Her swift reassembling of the Democratic coalition appeared to help narrow Mr. Trump’s significant advantage over Mr. Biden of only a few weeks ago. Ms. Harris was receiving 93 percent support from Democrats, the same share that Mr. Trump was getting from Republicans.

Overall, Mr. Trump leads Ms. Harris 48 percent to 47 percent among likely voters in a head-to-head match. That is a marked improvement for Democrats when compared to the Times/Siena poll in early July that showed Mr. Biden behind by six percentage points, in the aftermath of the poor debate performance that eventually drove him from the race."

The Harris campaign has a solid meme game.

Eton is no stranger to controversy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eton_College_controversies

The essay appears to be from 2011 but the articles I find on it are from 2019.

A lot of these controversies seem to mirror the current reactionary backlash that fuels people like Sacks and Musk and Ackman and others who are upset that their natural right to rule is question and dismissed.

Though I have a working theory that the reason people like Sacks/Musk are in reactionary freak out is because they went on social media and suddenly discovered the world is not filled with courtiers who say how high when they say jump.

My general view is that essays like this go to the heads of the young students who take them and the message they learn is not humility but they will be the rulers of the earth by nature and by right.

I went to a college where the majority of the students attended public high school but there was a substantial minority (30-40 percent) that attended private school. Many of these private schools were very "progressive" in their outlooks (well as progressive as you can be while charging substantial tuition)*. All the people who attended these schools remembered their headmaster giving a speech of "with great power comes great responsibility" or something close.

I always thought this was dangerous as a lesson for young people because it would go to their head.

Then again, I also toy with the idea that attending private school should come with a tax that is roughly six times full tuition.

*There is a runs every now and then story in New York Magazine or The Times about these very expensive private schools getting in hot water with the parents for a certain lesson plan being too woke or progressive and the teachers/admin often seem shocked that parents who pay five figures in tuition plus more in fees/donations feel entitled to critique the curriculum. That should be the most obvious thing in the world.

Also, let's be clear about why the press is having a sad. They wanted a blitz primary/brokered convention because they thought it would get lots of eyeballs and now they don't get it.

Lining up behind Harris was the smart move for a lot of reasons:

1. Harris has access to Biden's campaign resources and doesn't have to start from scratch;

2. She has grown since her campaign in 2020. Her speeches are amazing;

3. Party unity after three weeks of bad feelings;

4. She can be new blood and a continuance of the Biden admin for the 40 percent of Democrats who thought Biden should remain the nominee.
