On “Conservative Fusionism Is To Blame

Just planting meme seedlings, Joseph.
There is a biological basis for political ideology.....populations segregate into a consistant split... 1/3 conservative, 1/3 independent, 1/3 liberal.
A new party will arise from the ashes of the GOP. Maybe it will be Mark's left libertarians.....maybe it will be a New Secularized Right.
But the old GOP is wholly colonized by WECs and mormons and K-lo catholics (catholics that didnt vote for Obama).
I don't see why pretending that isnt true helps.....Larison should have been discussing transubstantiation of the host, when the Rapture is coming, and whether mormon dead baptism of jews is effective, not burke and hayek.

Freakin' hilarious!

For experience proves that the moral and physical qualities of man, whether good or evil, are transmissible in a certain degree from father to son. But I suspect that the equal rights of men will rise up against this privileged Solomon, and oblige us to continue acquiescence under the {'Amayrosis geneos aston} ["the degeneration of the race of men"] which Theognis complains of, and to content ourselves with the accidental aristoi produced by the fortuitous concourse of breeders.

For I agree with you that there is a natural aristocracy among men. The grounds of this are virtue and talents. Formerly bodily powers gave place among the aristoi. But since the invention of gunpowder has armed the weak as well as the strong with missile death, bodily strength, like beauty, good humor, politeness and other accomplishments, has become but an auxiliary ground of distinction. There is also an artificial aristocracy founded on wealth and birth, without either virtue or talents; for with these it would belong to the first class. The natural aristocracy I consider as the most precious gift of nature for the instruction, the trusts, and government of society. And indeed it would have been inconsistent in creation to have formed man for the social state, and not to have provided virtue and wisdom enough to manage the concerns of the society. May we not even say that that form of government is the best which provides the most effectually for a pure selection of these natural aristoi into the offices of government? The artificial aristocracy is a mischievous ingredient in government, and provision should be made to prevent it's ascendancy.

let me see.....Barack Obama== natural aristoi
George Bush Presidentsson == artificial aristoi

lol
worship Jefferson? He was an elitist polymath that designed our electoral system as a democratic meritocracy.
Obviously, conservatives are too poorly educated or IQ challenged to understand Jefferson.
;)

"

a very long-term dream.

well..no..it actually could be the green line...or the blue line....just not the red line in this graphic.

"

mybad...i thought this was your post?
n/e ways, it doesn't matter who conservatives SAY they are....their shape is currently defined by the WEC base.
Perception is reality.

"

w/e.
There is a a dichotomy between what you say you are and what you really are. As long as your candidate class is defined by your babylonian captivity to evangelical doctrine, you cannot achieve a plurality that will win.
For example, a republican candidate must embrace LIFE!, anti-SSM, and creationism at a minimum.
Whatever you claim them to be (small govt, free market capitalism, etc) the actual planks in your unstated but ironbound partyplatform are made of WEC doctrine.

"

To start with, let us admit that Hayek was wrong.
The growth of the welfare state doesn't cause socialism, it causes secularism.
Goverment welfare (ie, the public option for religion) causes the death of the non-competitive local religious welfare providers.
The GOP needs to become more secular to broaden the base. I estimate the GOP base at 75% WEC (white evangelical christian). As long as the GOP can only front WEC or mormon candidates, they remain unappealling to the key demographics.....youth, minorities, teh college educated, academic, intellectuals, and the cultural elites.

On “But What Are You For? The Death of Modern Movement Conservatism

The two things that are killing the GOP are the demographic timer on non-hispanic caucs, and the rise of the Third Culture.
Even Brooks is going third culture.
The modern instantiation of conservatism is virulently anti-science.
Only 6% of scientists are republicans.

"

pfft
The base is at least 75% WECs(white evangelical christians) at this point.
Check this out.
The base was 50% WEC in 2008 exit polls.....people leaving the GOP to become independents are non-WEC conservatives. Look at the 2012 candidate slate.
Romney-- mormon
Palin-- WEC
Pawlenty-- WEC
Huckabee--WEC
The problem this creates is the GOP can only field candidates that conform to evangelical doctrine masquerading as culture issues; creationism, covert racism, homophobia, chattel slavery of women and children.
An unappealing platform for the demographics the GOP needs to attract: college-graduates, youth, hispanics.
The homogeneously religious composition of the base explains why the base is so permeable to radio-evangelists (Rush) and televangelists (Beck).
This is actually WAI (working as intended).
The Founders built for system robustness, not flexibility.
That is why change is so hard to effect.
The genius of the Founders was that they built so that representation was as fairly distributed as they could design for.
The american people tend to elect the president best suited for that particular slice of spacetime….like Andy Jackson was a sumbitch, but I doubt the Union would have survived without him.
GW was elected by a meager 5 ec votes and lost the popular by 500k.
He would have been a perfectly adequate president to shepherd the declining white protestant republicans into the demographic sunset.
But 911 intervened.
He simply wasn’t up to task to deal with a singleton catastrophic event like that.
Lack of substrate.

On “Prospects for Reclaiming Intellectual Conservatism

I would say your prospects are pretty darned dim, Will.
Consider what 40 years of memetic selection for individuals either too IQ-challenged or too uneducated to understand theory of evolution has done to the conservative base.
A kind of inverse social darwinism (heh) or selection for stupid.
And given that GOP is essentially enslaved (double heh) to the religious (mormon/evangelical christian) base and can only run religious candidates (1 mormon and two evangelical xians) on a platform of evangelical doctrine (LIFE!, chattel slavery of women and children, homophobia, racism, jesus-love and neocon intervensionism as a sort of militarized missionariism)......your chances are pretty damn poor.

I would say "intellectual conservatism" has lim [negative infinity] probability of making a comeback.
lulz

Mouse over the black "college student" in sully's hathos pic.
He is holding Glenn Beck's favorite book!!!!
hahahaha

The GOP is now the party of Low-IQ Religious White People.
You're as dead as the dinosaurs, but the tiny little brains in your hips don't know it yet.

"

huh?
that chalk drawing could have come from a lot of places.
i don't see Alinsky's name on it.

"

I don't know about you guyz....but Hayward omitting Skousen is rather disengenous I think....the guy was a mormon conspiracy crank too crazy for even the LDS, and his pamphlets seem to have informed the 912 Project hella lot more than Hayek and Burke.

"

It’s an idea I read from Cleon Skousen from his book in the 1950s, ‘The Naked Communist,’ and where he talked about someday the history of this country’s going to be lost because it’s going to be hijacked by intellectuals and communists and everything else. And I think we’re there.”

Show me where Obama quotes Alinsky.

"

But...Beck's inspiration aren't Hayek and Burke.....the 912 project is wholly Willard Skousen.....Hayward kinda neglects any mention of him.

Whatever the circumstances, Beck really began touting Skousen in the latter half of 2007. The first brief mention of Skousen in the online archives of Beck's radio show is Sept. 24, 2007. Less than two months later, Beck interviewed conservative pundit David Horowitz on his radio program. He asked him, "Have you ever read any Skousen? Have you read -- do you remember 'The Naked Communist'? I went back and reread that, it was printed in the 1950s. I reread that recently. You look at all the things the communists wanted to accomplish. It's all been done." Horowitz agreed.

The very next week, Bill Bennett appeared on Beck's radio program and received the same question. "Are you familiar with Skousen?" asked Beck. When Bennett replied yes, Beck gushed. "He's fantastic," he said. "I went back and I read 'The Naked Communist' and at the end of that Skousen predicted [that] someday soon you won't be able to find the truth in schools or in libraries or anywhere else because it won't be in print anymore. So you must collect those books. It's an idea I read from Cleon Skousen from his book in the 1950s, 'The Naked Communist,' and where he talked about someday the history of this country's going to be lost because it's going to be hijacked by intellectuals and communists and everything else. And I think we're there."

Hmmm...I wonder if that glaring ommission on Haywards part is laziness........or actual dishonesty?

On “Reading Comprehension FAIL

A sort of natural selection for Stupid.
;)

"

heh
actually, what we see in Palin is the pinnacle of Inverse Social Darwinism, where for 40 years the GOP has selected for members and leadership individuals either too uneducated or too low IQ to understand theory of evolution.

On “Another (predictable) liberal defense of Rep. Grayson

and keep happening.

I saw another telling statistic the other day: for the first time ever, among children in the US under five years old, less than 50% are white.

"

Could you people possibly be any more IQ-challenged?
Nation, pre-2008 election

Instead, an Obama victory would simultaneously be comeuppance to a forty-year-old conservative strategy of scapegoating minorities and the realization of long-term demographic trends that finally allow those minorities collectively to achieve majority status. Relative to his national levels of support, Obama will receive pretty much the same percentage of support from virtually all demographic groups that previous, defeated Democratic nominees such as Michael Dukakis and John Kerry received. The difference will be that, in 2008, those groups will be large enough to win a national election.
Since 1968 American presidential elections have been defined as a competition over fundamentally conservative identity groups. Even though they are not precisely congruous, a direct lineage exists from the Nixon-forged Southern Strategy of the 1960s and ’70s, to the Reagan Democrats of the ’80s, to Mark Penn’s Bubbas of the ’90s and on to the Values Voters of this decade. These swing voting groups are overwhelmingly white, not very urban, heavily blue-collar, generally Southern and always socially conservative. Even though the labels have changed, these four criteria have been the genetic code of swing voters for nearly forty years. In every case, the decisive swing voting group has been hostile to impending social change brought on by various civil rights movements and resentful of the cultural predilections of an urban, bicoastal “liberal elite.” The quest to capture these voters has created an entire generation of pundits, strategists and party leaders who will do everything possible to appear not-liberal, not-elite and in touch with the values of small-town America, whatever those values happen to be at any given moment.

That is what happened.
And that is what is going to keep happening.
Game ovah, point, set, match.

On “Soft bigotry, meet low expectations

But....Jamelle.....the Surge didn't work...unless it was just intended to be a short term bandage that held long enough to get Sick Grandpa and the Backup Dimbo into the WH.

After people decide that cheaper healthcare is not the sign of the apocalypse, and we are treated to the Epic Wipe of republicans trying to woo the hispanic vote while simultaneously preventing the Teabagger Demographic from rage-logging.....

I quit reading her when she said Matt Taibbi was sarahpalin on economics, and then he won the award....or maybe it was when she blamed the pro-choicers for Dr. Tiller's murder-by-terrorist....I dunno.
She is a baddie....she shows up for raids in greens with no pots or chants and a bad spec, and expects the raid leader(Sully) to give her welfare epics and linkage so she can ninja-loot after she gets carried through content.
I see no value-added there E.D.
She is a profound waste of spacetime.

not in this metaverse.
Obama put healthcare 1st BOTH to move it out from 2010 and to keep Horrorshow Bush fresh on the electorates mind.
Guess what we are doing next?
Immigration reform!!....immigration reform in 2010.
lol
You think O is screwing up, but he is six moves out in 3D chess and the republicans are playing go fish.
Something will pass, and then we will be on to immigration reform, where we will be treated to the epic spectacle of the GOP leadership trying to hispander the demographic timer while the Teabagger Demographic goes medieval on their wide asses.

On “demographic change as political fuel

independence.
Also Kling is wrong too.
I would just like to point out that this country was CONCIEVED, DESIGNED, and IMPLEMENTED by elites, and that in a meritocracy, we ALWAYS select some stripe of aristoi, either natural like polymath Thomas Jefferson suggested (see Barack Obama) or artificial (see George Bush Presidentsson).

"

Nah, scotty, you are wrong.
It has always been about race and the horrorshow legacy of slavery, right from the beginning when South Carolina made Jefferson strike a condemnation of slavery from the declaration of independents.
The growth of the federal government and the welfare state started when the feds were forced to deliver civil rights and safety net welfare to black citizens in the south. Granted that is an oversimplification, but that is why Jim Manzi's pockets of Distributed Jesusland can't work.....federalism is just cover for localized virtual chattel slavery....and not just of blacks.
We already have pockets of federalists in this country....one of them was called Yearning For Zion. Abortion isn't a moral issue......it is a control issue, Scotty.
It is part of the virtual chattel slavery of women and children so admired by the teabaggers.
Hayek, Oakeshott, Burke, all just specious bullshytt cover so soi-disant conservatives don’t have to acknowledge that they are making treaties with the racist troglodytes that have always comprised the majority of their base.
